LitRPG

So, I was reading Reddit . . . (how many conversations started this way?) and someone linked to something in Good Reads and I was curious, so I clicked on the link.  I forget what the conversation was about because my mind exploded as soon as I saw the book.  I read the reviews and I searched Wikipedia and then my mind exploded.  LitRPG.  I did not know that this was a thing.  I had been doing it for years, but I never thought it was a thing.  My latest RPG that I was running is being then transcribed by me into a format by me that fits the description of this form of art.  Art?  Literature?  Well people are reading it and people are buying it so it must mean that it is both and people are, I assume, making a living off of it, so maybe it is a way that I can get published as a author.  Get my world Out There.  I have not even read any of this literature yet.  I am not sure that I will.  The one that the reddit pointed to was called Morningwood, and the reviews made me realise that high art it was not, filled with teenage male Incel wrought boys that describe women’s uses limited to their bust size and used the literature to masturbate to.  This was not good literature, but it might have room for better stuff.  Who knows?

Self Isolation

Natural20 is mad with me right now!  She wants me to self isolate when I am not at work.  I work retail, so I am the least isolated person in her household.  Her husband works at a tech firm and has been isolating for a week, and that has been strenuous because he has not been self isolating.  More like he has been self isolating because his dates have been isolating so he has not been dating.  He goes out to get Tim Hortons and has his coffee and reads the internet from the refuge of that establishment.  He has been using the excuse of self isolating to not do the things he doesn’t want to do, but still does the things he wants to do.
The kids are adolescents.  Jake has been self isolating for months now, immersing himself in computer games and only arriving at the dinner table when he is starving and then submerging back again.  Jenny wakes at noon and then reads until 2 am.  She has a social life but is introverted keeping to one or two friends at a time and that is it.  She has a girlfriend, but she has not been socializing much with her.  It seems like a social experiment with the two of them, possibly a means to ward off attention of others but still not see much of each other.  They are in different grades have different classes and see very little of each other in school.  Interesting.  But more to the facts at hand, she is socially isolated.  She texts to people she has never met all over the world and speaks about them as friends.
Natural20 runs her business out of her home, and although people come there to see her, she has an easy online option so, most people she works with are at their homes.
Me I work with the public, but I have very little contact with them, lately I have been disinfecting everything as part of my job to the point that I mostly wash my hands to get the disinfectant off my hands.  They, my hands, are cracking, from washing too much.  I take public transit.  I go to Tim Horton’s.  when I get home, I go to my room and turn my computer on and watch Netflix or play a computer game.  I don’t write, because I have those other distractions and I admit, I am not that disciplined.  So, if I want to work, I go out.  If I want to write, I go out.
Part of the problem is something that has been hanging in the background since I moved into the house almost a year ago; I have no space.  Natural20 moved from her spacious king bed and spacious closet space and her spacious room near her beloved Jake and Jenny to the basement where the spare bedroom is to live with me.  Jake and Jenny shared an ‘office’ in the basement which Jake took over because he was being very loud all the time and Jenny could not work and she moved her stuff to the library and then chose to work everywhere else except there, but does her sewing there so . . ..  Husband has the master bedroom, associated walking closet, and two bathrooms, (really there is much to be said about the people that did the planning for the house that there are three bedrooms on the top floor with two in the master bedroom) and an office in the basement.  A very large office at that, almost as big as the bedroom I share with Natural20.  Natural20 has an office that she works from on the top floor.  She has all her business there, conducts office hours there and meets clients there.  It is the tiniest of all the personal workspaces in the house and the most used and the highest traffic. But that leads to my personal workspace, it is at the local Tim Horton’s.
So Natural20 wants me to Self Isolate.  In my bedroom, effectively.  That is where all my stuff is, and it is where I do the least amount of work and the most non-productive time, I sleep there, watch tv there, have sex there, play computer games there.  I looked at all the spaces.  I am not going to deprive Jenny of her space even if she doesn’t use it.  There is no other place that has the light that I need to work.  I need natural light and I have never felt at home deprived of it.  The only time that I had a lack of light was the places I lived in my twenties when I was deeply depressed; is there a correlation?  Depression and the lack of natural light?  I am willing to conceded that there is.

Anyways, why do I need to Self Isolate?  It is March 16, 2020, the Novel Corona Virus-19 is spreading around the world.  People are dying, but moreover, people are getting sick and clogging the health system, well not yet, and we hope not ever.  I am not at risk to die.  I don’t have any co-morbidities, and I am healthy, and I work outside—never discount the production of vitamin D.  I am very active and when it gets warmer, I will be much more active.  Self Isolating is a health precaution to slow the inevitable spread of the virus so that the people that need the hospital beds will have the hospital beds when they need them because the serious cases will be recovered or dead before they get to the hospital.  The serious cases need the hospital beds, or they will die.  Self Isolating is supposed work be decreasing to transmission of the disease from the infected to the uninfected.  I understand that, but because of where I work, I can’t Self Isolate completely unless I just stop going to work.

Here is what is known.  It takes the infected up to fourteen days to show signs of the virus, but most people show signs after 8 days.  Once sick, most people, about 80% will recover in another two weeks, but some cases are serious, and they will not recover until three to five weeks and then there are critically ill people that don’t recover for five to eight weeks.  In total about three percent of all cases are fatal, but younger people almost no one dies and amongst the elderly, almost fifteen percent die—people die if they have co-morbidities: influenza, cardiovascular issues, diabetes, cancer etc.  Self Isolation is supposed to allow all those infected to show the signs that they have been infected and then to be bed ridden until they have recovered or die.  And then what?  Then they can go out again?  Maybe.  Maybe not.  The retail workers that do not have jobs that they can do at home continue to go out.  Grocery stores are required to be open, so that people can have access to food, so they can’t self isolate.  Stores that do not shut down for two weeks are not self isolating either.  So, what happens after the two weeks?  All the people infected in self isolation are still in self isolation.  All the people not in self isolation are either still not infected or are infected and are now in self isolation as they recover.  The people that have been infected but are not showing signs continue to spread the virus.  These infected transmitters are people who were in Self Isolation how needed to go out and get things to maintain their isolation, and they are people not in Isolation.  Maybe, we need to Self Isolate for two weeks and then everyone who has Isolated has to take the jobs of the people that and let the ones couldn’t Self Isolate.  Can you imagine Google Executives running the grocery store as cashiers?  What is the value of someone who can’t Self Isolate on Self Isolating when they are on their own time?  Given that they take public transit and deal with the public at work.
Should I move out for two weeks?  Get a hotel room and Self Isolate from the people that can Self Isolate?  It is not like they are truly Self Isolating if they are associating with me, a person that can’t Isolate because work is not flexible?  Remember Retail.  For the record we have a person or several people whose job it is to sanitize everything that people touch all day long and cashiers that sanitize their workstation every transaction.

Okay update, Natural20 tried to read the post so I took it down and stole her phone so that we could talk about it before she read it.  Not very mature, but I did not want to be attacked for being wrong.  I don’t mind being wrong, I am wrong often, partially, rarely completely.  But I knew I was wrong.  By the end of the above I had already talked myself into self isolating.  By the end of the day work called and told me that shifts had changed into three sets of nine workers so that people would be limited that way and so I was not going to be working that Tuesday as planned.  I saw the writing on the wall and I went to work anyway, not to work but to say hi and buy some stuff and then never return . . . unless my shift actually made it and was still on the schedule.  And then someone from another store tested positive for the virus and all our stores in our chain closed.  That was Wednesday.  The Boss called and asked me if I had any questions and I responded to him about the state of the store and the need to get it ready for spring should that there are people left to work there and people left who want to buy things.  So, I was selected to come in and get the store ready.  It is not much, 6 hours a day five days a week, but it is not nothing.
And Natural20 made a place for me in her home so I do not need to go to Tim Hortons and write there.  It is not as good as Tim’s because the ambiance is not the same, but the tea is free, and the bathrooms are in better shape.  I still go to Tim’s every day—it is part of that making connections with people.  you smile and ask how their day is going and they treat you better, but when things go bad in the world and they close all of their customer seating and become a take out only place it is important to keep going and letting them know, the people who still work there, that you feel for their situation.  I argued on Facebook that it is the chains that you have less to worry about.  They have company wide mandates and protocols that tell them how they must act, and the mother company will shut them down.  But the Mom and Pop stores they have more to worry about they might not have the resources to keep to the same standards.  I know, because I work in a small chain store, part of the community and big enough to have resources, I know the steps that they have gone in this new world of the Pandemic.  EI gives us 55%, but our company will boost that by another 20% for the duration of the pandemic, however that will last.

People are talking like it is going to be Our Great Depression.  We will see.  One thing that might happen, is happening is that the USA is becoming a more socialist nation by the second.  And the Virus may kill off the bulk of the most conservative people in the world.  Perhaps history will say that the disease allowed us to be green.

5e Monk sub-classes The Five Animal Martial Arts

Monk Martial Art Styles
Tiger Style   form weapons: tiger claws and small handheld weapons, shuriken
3rd level
Tiger Form Martial Arts
The Tiger is a very dangerous beast. One does not stalk it without care. The tiger is at home in the underbrush as it is on the plains and it will leap to attack the unwary.
  • Prone fighting no disadvantage on melee attacks. Attackers within 5’ still have advantage to attack
  • 1 ki to re-set from prone or pounce half your movement away, to attack a target, one or the other.
6th level
Spine Shattering Bite
The tiger stalks its prey quietly from the dense underbrush when it makes its move it is to kill, there is no other option.
Spine Shattering Bite spend up to 3 ki points, each Ki point spent doubles, Triples or quadruples damage caused by the attack. Can be spent after the hit occurs but before damage is rolled.
(Under Aubrey’s rules if this were a critical hit at 6th level 6+d6 would become up to 24+4d6 dmg)
11th level
Leap from Cloaking Shadows
Surprise is often how the stalking cat wins the day. The martial artist knows that if surprise is gained the fight will soon be over.
Spend 5 ki to activate Leap from Cloaking Shadows and cause everyone to forget you were even present, when you attack, it will be from surprise. You will get one free round of attacks on your target and may not target you until the next round, because until you attack, they forgot you were there…
Effects last only one round, before you must spend another 5 ki or attack. If you leave the area people will remember that you were present but be confused about your description or what you did.
17th level
Angry Predator Frenzy
Often when a tiger is cornered it becomes its most dangerous escape is not an option, so it becomes clear there is only two options it dies, or its attacker dies.
Spending 5 Ki and get an additional attack every round. if you are reduced to 0 hp you may continue to fight until you take -hp total damage. Lastly, Spine Shattering Bite costs 1 ki less to use, minimum 0 ki. If the battle ends and you have less than 1 hp, you die.
Mantis Style  form weapons staff, seven section staff, bo-sticks, nunchakus etc.
3rd Level
Mantis Form
When the Mantis engages its prey a feeling of doom falls upon it, the Mantis is choosing its moment and until then every move the prey makes, the mantis makes.
Make a contested Insight check vs. Deception of opponent if successful the martial artist gains either +2 to their AC or a +2 to their attack bonus for a minute.  Spend a Ki to get both.  Increase the number of opponents effected at 6th, 11th and 17th levels
Opponent’s allies find your movements so indistinguishable that they may believe that your prey is you, if you spent a Ki point above, attacks against you may instead hit your opponent %50 chance.
6th Level
Mantis Defensive Strike
The Mantis’ arms are armoured, when they attack it is a defence, the prey cannot hit when it is engaged.
Any successful attack made by the Mantis Warrior imposes a penalty equal to the excesses of their attack on the next successful attack against the Mantis Warrior.  e.g. Player attacks a creature with an AC of 13 and hits with a 17, the additional 4 are added to her AC for the next successful attack, possibly causing it to miss, a critical would count as an automatic miss.
11th level
Mantis Stalking Stance
The Mantis stance is so still that the prey does not see it until it is too late.
For 1 Ki the Mantis Warrior may become invisible (for up to one minute, concentration)
In addition, the skin of the Mantis Warrior becomes resistant to non magical, piercing, slashing and bludgeoning attacks.
17th level
Mantis Stare of Death
When a Mantis catches its prey in the open, its large eyes entrance its prey until it can do little but give up its life to the Mantis.
By spending 5 Ki points, any opponent that has been affected by the Mantis Form becomes entranced, for one minute, and can do nothing unless attacked.

Snake Style form weapons, Sai, Daggers, Short bows
3rd level
Snake Form
The Snake sways studying its opponent until it is ready to strike.  When it strikes it is because it has found the weakness of its prey.
Make a stealth check DC opponent’s Dexterity to reduce the effectiveness of your opponent’s armour and shield, but not dexterity, by 2
Spend 1 or more Ki to increase dexterity by 2, up to 20*, for one minute.  At 6th, 11th, and 17th level the racial maximum dexterity increases by 2 each.
6th level
Adamantium Fang Strike
The Snake’s fangs are strong and perpetually sharp, when it strikes its attacks are true and penetrate their prey.
For 1 ki the Practitioner’s become fused with adamantium; for one attack the Martial Artist may ignore all armour to hit the target and when attacking, when attacking inanimate objects, the Martial Artist ignores all hardness.
11th level
Venomous Death Strike
When the Snake strikes its victim, it knows that it is dead, its venom coursing through its veins.
For 3 Ki, the Martial Artist’s attack, when it hits, by passes the skin, muscle and bone and causes damage directly to its internal organs, causing a critical hit.  The martial artists hands are covered in their ichor, skin unbroken.
17th level
Snake Soul Strike
Often the mere presence of the snake ready to strike will cause its prey to surrender and be devoured; no resistance offered.
Once per long rest the martial artist can spend 5 Ki while it performs a complicated series Martial Artist Katas (Acrobatics, Performance, Athletics or Intimidation) with a DC of the creature’s CR.  If successful, the display inflicts 10d10 damage to the target.

Monkey Style  form weapons improvised weapons
3rd level
Monkey Form
The Monkey moves through the forest seemingly at whim, capering up and down trees leaping from bough to bough only to land at random precisely where it was headed.
The martial artist substitutes a move action for acrobatics roll to move through his opponents and land beside his chosen target.  If the roll exceeds the insight check of any creature, he moves by they may not make attacks of opportunities and will be distracted for that round making all attacks at -2.
As a bonus action, the martial artist may attempt to disarm a distracted opponent with a successful Sleight of Hand check against the opponent’s Insight check.
6th level
Monkey Leaping Stance
When the Monkey leaps into the trees it disappears and chooses its own time and place to come down.
The martial artist at the end of its movement, will leap into the air and spend 2 Ki and dimension door 60’ away.  The martial artist must have at least 5’ movement available to accomplish this manoeuvre.  If the Martial Artist has any attacks left, they may use them now and if their Acrobatics check beat the target’s insight check, the attacks are at advantage.
11th level
Monkey’s Raging Tantrum
The tenacity of the Monkey and its Strength are a thing to behold but not experience.
When amid battle the Monk may use the ultimate expression of improvised weapons, their opponents.  Any opponent that is their size or smaller may be thrown at another opponent up to 30’ away and cause both to suffer damage.  This attack will cause the monk to move 10’ towards another opponent where they may use that opponent as a similar weapon.  Grasping the target to throw ignores all armour, natural or otherwise except magic and dexterity, but the intended target still must be hit.  Both weapon and target must roll a dexterity saving throw to remain standing DC of the attack roll.  Creatures larger than the monk take the damage as the monk vaults off them and must make the save or fall prone.  The attacks may continue if there is movement left in the monk.  This attack frenzy costs 3 Ki.  The monk may still use their bonus action as normal.
17th level
Mad Monkey Attack Prana
When the Monkey is truly angered, it is best to be nowhere near.
The monk centers themself and spends 3 Ki they may split into three separate individuals with only one pool of Ki and one pool of hit points.  The monk may continue to act until the Ki or HP pool is reduced to 0, then one or more of the selves must rejoin the others.  Rejoining has the full effects of a short rest, but only refreshes 1d6 Ki/self absorbed.

Crane Style  form weapons war fans, whips
3rd Level
Crane Form
The Crane raises its leg and wings spread looking as vulnerable as it is graceful, this their opponents first mistake.
The use of step on the wind is extended by 10’ and is perceived as actual flight.  As soon as the monk can move 60’ in a single move action they are able to take flight, dropping below 60’/round drops them into a shallow glide dropping 20’ per round until they land.
The first attack upon any opponent causes them to make a dexterity save or fall prone DC of 8 + dexterity and wisdom modifier of the monk, minimum of 10
6th level
Crane Wing Sweep
When the Crane lands among enemies it will whip the wind around them to push them off balance.
The Martial artist draws the air around it and draws it into a small but strong whirlwind that knocks all enemies down within 20’, for 3 Ki.  The opponents must make a dexterity save DC (8 + Dex + Wis mod)
11th level
Bill Spears the Fish
The crane sees the fish and spears it with its bill then swallows it whole.
Any time the character approaches a prone figure they may attack and use a Ki point to cause the target a constitution save DC (8 + Dex + Wis mod) or take an automatic critical attack
17th level
Crane Dodges the Wind
The Crane is an expert flier and handles Changes in the wind in expert style.
Any calculation that does not include your proficiency bonus as a Monk, now does for a minute after you spend 4 Ki.  This includes Initiative, Armour Class, and Deflecting Missiles,
Crane Style should involve movement and possible limited flight looking vulnerable but lightning fast attacks

The city of Awsland places of interest

Plot general outline
Get a job- routine expedition to ruins outside town
Choose a moral stance- resupply ruin expedition, mercenaries want to push prices up and have organized an ambush on the road and want to blame Kobolds
No matter what they have chosen to do, attack the caravan or defend the caravan, the guild thinks they need to go elsewhere for the time being. Luckily there is a quest that has been on the back burner for a few months and the Guild of Navigators and Astrologers has seen, literally, and they need a group of investigators to go there.  They need to establish a base camp outside the Ruins of Awsland and begin looking for the legendary Vault of Relic.  Which almost everyone has heard of akin to the lost trove of Monte Cristo, Oak Island, and King Solomon’s Mine.
Points of interest:
Outside the city there is a very large section of the ground covered with termite hills.  The hills reach two meters tall and so are noticeable at a distance.  Near this region there are a couple Ankheg ambush sites.  The bugs are hoping to attack any large animal that comes to feed on the termites.  The ankhegs have done this too.
There are a couple of bulette in the area that is in between herds.  The area is rocky, and the sewer system has provided inconveniencing disruptions to their burrowing and forced them above ground and as such has been a popular mating site.  These creatures mate like bedbugs and if they are interrupted, they will gladly dine on the interruption.
The wall, which is now just a low berm that encircles the city, it is about 6 kilometers from the city center.  The city was said to have filled the city and then spilled over.  There were four main gates, and these are clear as large mounds there were four roads that went from the outer walls to the city center, they are visible as wide raised mounds
The Necropolis, which is immaculately cared for even now, although there are no one living here.  There are grave markers and tombs made with stone that has not been taken to build other cities.  The grounds are kept, and the trees and grass has been trimmed.
Most of the buildings are gone, but there are a few isolated structures mostly intact, although in ruin.  Many are occupied:
Building with Manticore.  The top floor has long been ruined; the roof is gone but it has provided the current resident a good place to lair.  The home was originally a villa and they employed undead guards who still guard the lower levels.
Building with Old Ogre.  The Building was guarded by undead, but the ogre took these out and used this area as a home.  There are two older ogres here and one younger Ogre.  They are the source of the ogres in the area.  They negotiated with the local hobgoblins resulting in Half Ogres.
On the other side of the Necropolis is a building that has been ignored by the goblins, especially when their patrols disappeared.  There is a Ettin in one of the ruins that was formally guarded by undead.  The Ettin destroyed them.
There is a more impressive building in the outskirts of the city, it was a library and the books and scrolls were returned to locations by undead servants.  The books have mostly fallen to pieces, there area few treasures still located therein, but the upper levels of the library have been taken over by a duo of Lamia they currently have three children and will soon turn them loose.  One of the books that is intact contains pictures and descriptions of the original building of the city with Illuminations of each building.  The Illuminations make the book quite valuable.  There is a book with ancient hymns that have a bardic spell
There are a few buildings that have colonies of gargoyles on them.  The residents either don’t know about them or see them as additional protection.  The gargoyles dine on small animals and some larger and are given some treasure by the monsters where there is enough insight to see the value.
There is a lake in the center of one of the spokes and it dominates it.  There is a waterfall as it crosses one of the roads.  There are a lot of fish in this lake and some giant frogs too.  But this is the only open water in the city.  The river starts to disappear after it crosses the road.  After a few hundred meters it disappears entirely.  The area is a domain of a small water Elemental and a few mephits too  the Water elemental is content to just be.  He spawned here because this is the largest lake this close to the river and not of the river; it is the biggest lake not part of any river for hundreds of kilometers.
City Center.  There are several relatively intact buildings here.  Perhaps they were left to honour the city itself or perhaps because looters were afraid of this part of the city.
The chapel.  The Chapel is wholly intact.  There are skeleton caretakers here keeping the inside and the outside in good repair.  And there is a wraith, that protects it, with a maximum number of Spectres.
The Palace is currently the home of a medusa. It has several rooms that are open to the elements which she farms.  The Goblins had in the past made many offerings to her, hoping that she would not hunt them.  The goblins did not tell this to the invading Kobolds, to their peril.  The North wing contains an entrance to the sewers which are mostly intact.  There is a Minotaur possibly a few in the sewers.  They have been here for many years; the first ones killed the maintenance squads and the sewers and the sewers there fell into ruin causing the lake.  They learned.
Maintenance teams.  Many of the people of this city were wealthy and they were able to buy corpses of the poor which they had animated to take care of their property, or to guard the buildings.  These guardians lasted longer than city and they are doing jobs that they did years ago.  The sewers and the Necropolis have many of these.  The goblins learned of some of these and incorporated it into their culture, for example they will drop bodies in the necropolis, and these will be buried.
A few of the buildings house minotaur families, they have access to the sewers from them, but one is the home of an aging manticore.
The City was the home of a large tribe of goblins.  The tribe included Hobgoblins and Bugbears.  The Kobolds attacked and defeated the hobgoblins and cowed the others, who joined with the stronger force if the party attacks the goblins and the kobolds head on, they will try to track the PCs down.  Their Dragonborn leaders are intelligent and well trained, some of the Kobolds are stronger than they look, and they will be deadly.
If the characters stick around in this area, they will have an encounter with a Yellow Dragon wyrmling or three.
Yellow dragons are a mix of Red and Green.  Their Breath weapon is a cloud of gas that fills an area like a green Dragon and causes coughing and sputtering as it smells like rot, but when exposed to flame it explodes, which the dragon will provide if there is no ignition source.  Yellow Dragons prefer areas of open verdant grasslands.  They value animal above all and will often be located around great herds.  As it grows in power it will often mate with these animals to make half-dragons which they use to herd other animals.  They grow jealous of other herds and will hunt them down and kill them and those nearby.
The chapel is key, only after the wraith is cleared from the building may it be searched without harassment.  There are plenty of rare books there and there are many gilt and gold implements.  And many priceless tapestries.  A few of them show the city they way it was in the early days of the First King of Awsland, King Awsland in fact.  There is some No Sun writing on it.  No Sun writing are words that only appear when the two suns are eclipsed and the sky is blue, then the letters can be read.  It indicates the location of the Vault.  However, the Vault is an extradimensional space located on a wall in the palace.  But it requires some distinctive stonework to be placed around the wall first, stone that is no longer there.
If the characters do not discover the No Sun Writing, it will be, and the characters will be called to investigate further.
The Characters will be sent on a quest to find the stone that was looted from Awsland.

The Old man on the hut near the city will warn them of this, if they ask why he lives close to the goblins he says he and they have a truce, they don’t bother him, and he doesn’t kill them.  If asked about anything he will give truthful answers.  He is a First One and he is watching the area and has been for a very long time  H knows about No Sun writing and if allowed to examine the tapestries, he will say so.  As a First One, he can read No Sun Writing without the No Sun part.  He is also fluent in many dead languages.  If he reads the writing, he will tell them that it is impossible to open the vault now, the writing says only a Knight of Awsland can do so.
