So, I was reading Reddit . . . (how many conversations
started this way?) and someone linked to something in Good Reads and I was curious,
so I clicked on the link. I forget what
the conversation was about because my mind exploded as soon as I saw the
book. I read the reviews and I searched
Wikipedia and then my mind exploded.
LitRPG. I did not know that this
was a thing. I had been doing it for years,
but I never thought it was a thing. My
latest RPG that I was running is being then transcribed by me into a format by
me that fits the description of this form of art. Art?
Literature? Well people are
reading it and people are buying it so it must mean that it is both and people
are, I assume, making a living off of it, so maybe it is a way that I can get
published as a author. Get my world Out There. I have not even read any of this literature
yet. I am not sure that I will. The one that the reddit pointed to was called
Morningwood, and the reviews made me realise that high art it was not, filled
with teenage male Incel wrought boys that describe women’s uses limited to
their bust size and used the literature to masturbate to. This was not good literature, but it might
have room for better stuff. Who knows?

Self Isolation
Natural20 is mad with me right now! She wants me to self isolate when I am not at
work. I work retail, so I am the least
isolated person in her household. Her
husband works at a tech firm and has been isolating for a week, and that has
been strenuous because he has not been self isolating. More like he has been self isolating because
his dates have been isolating so he has not been dating. He goes out to get Tim Hortons and has his
coffee and reads the internet from the refuge of that establishment. He has been using the excuse of self
isolating to not do the things he doesn’t want to do, but still does the things
he wants to do.
The kids are adolescents.
Jake has been self isolating for months now, immersing himself in
computer games and only arriving at the dinner table when he is starving and
then submerging back again. Jenny wakes
at noon and then reads until 2 am. She
has a social life but is introverted keeping to one or two friends at a time
and that is it. She has a girlfriend,
but she has not been socializing much with her.
It seems like a social experiment with the two of them, possibly a means
to ward off attention of others but still not see much of each other. They are in different grades have different
classes and see very little of each other in school. Interesting.
But more to the facts at hand, she is socially isolated. She texts to people she has never met all over
the world and speaks about them as friends.
Natural20 runs her business out of her home, and although
people come there to see her, she has an easy online option so, most people she
works with are at their homes.
Me I work with the public, but I have very little contact
with them, lately I have been disinfecting everything as part of my job to the
point that I mostly wash my hands to get the disinfectant off my hands. They, my hands, are cracking, from washing
too much. I take public transit. I go to Tim Horton’s. when I get home, I go to my room and turn my
computer on and watch Netflix or play a computer game. I don’t write, because I have those other
distractions and I admit, I am not that disciplined. So, if I want to work, I go out. If I want to write, I go out.
Part of the problem is something that has been hanging in
the background since I moved into the house almost a year ago; I have no
space. Natural20 moved from her spacious
king bed and spacious closet space and her spacious room near her beloved Jake
and Jenny to the basement where the spare bedroom is to live with me. Jake and Jenny shared an ‘office’ in the
basement which Jake took over because he was being very loud all the time and
Jenny could not work and she moved her stuff to the library and then chose to
work everywhere else except there, but does her sewing there so . . .. Husband has the master bedroom, associated
walking closet, and two bathrooms, (really there is much to be said about the
people that did the planning for the house that there are three bedrooms on the
top floor with two in the master bedroom) and an office in the basement. A very large office at that, almost as big as
the bedroom I share with Natural20.
Natural20 has an office that she works from on the top floor. She has all her business there, conducts
office hours there and meets clients there.
It is the tiniest of all the personal workspaces in the house and the
most used and the highest traffic. But that leads to my personal workspace, it
is at the local Tim Horton’s.
So Natural20 wants me to Self Isolate. In my bedroom, effectively. That is where all my stuff is, and it is
where I do the least amount of work and the most non-productive time, I sleep
there, watch tv there, have sex there, play computer games there. I looked at all the spaces. I am not going to deprive Jenny of her space
even if she doesn’t use it. There is no
other place that has the light that I need to work. I need natural light and I have never felt at
home deprived of it. The only time that
I had a lack of light was the places I lived in my twenties when I was deeply
depressed; is there a correlation?
Depression and the lack of natural light? I am willing to conceded that there is.
Anyways, why do I need to Self Isolate? It is March 16, 2020, the Novel Corona
Virus-19 is spreading around the world.
People are dying, but moreover, people are getting sick and clogging the
health system, well not yet, and we hope not ever. I am not at risk to die. I don’t have any co-morbidities, and I am
healthy, and I work outside—never discount the production of vitamin D. I am very active and when it gets warmer, I
will be much more active. Self Isolating
is a health precaution to slow the inevitable spread of the virus so that the people
that need the hospital beds will have the hospital beds when they need them
because the serious cases will be recovered or dead before they get to the
hospital. The serious cases need the
hospital beds, or they will die. Self
Isolating is supposed work be decreasing to transmission of the disease from
the infected to the uninfected. I
understand that, but because of where I work, I can’t Self Isolate completely
unless I just stop going to work.
Here is what is known.
It takes the infected up to fourteen days to show signs of the virus,
but most people show signs after 8 days.
Once sick, most people, about 80% will recover in another two weeks, but
some cases are serious, and they will not recover until three to five weeks and
then there are critically ill people that don’t recover for five to eight
weeks. In total about three percent of
all cases are fatal, but younger people almost no one dies and amongst the
elderly, almost fifteen percent die—people die if they have co-morbidities:
influenza, cardiovascular issues, diabetes, cancer etc. Self Isolation is supposed to allow all those
infected to show the signs that they have been infected and then to be bed
ridden until they have recovered or die.
And then what? Then they can go
out again? Maybe. Maybe not.
The retail workers that do not have jobs that they can do at home
continue to go out. Grocery stores are
required to be open, so that people can have access to food, so they can’t self
isolate. Stores that do not shut down
for two weeks are not self isolating either.
So, what happens after the two weeks?
All the people infected in self isolation are still in self
isolation. All the people not in self
isolation are either still not infected or are infected and are now in self
isolation as they recover. The people
that have been infected but are not showing signs continue to spread the
virus. These infected transmitters are
people who were in Self Isolation how needed to go out and get things to
maintain their isolation, and they are people not in Isolation. Maybe, we need to Self Isolate for two weeks
and then everyone who has Isolated has to take the jobs of the people that and
let the ones couldn’t Self Isolate. Can
you imagine Google Executives running the grocery store as cashiers? What is the value of someone who can’t Self
Isolate on Self Isolating when they are on their own time? Given that they take public transit and deal
with the public at work.
Should I move out for two weeks? Get a hotel room and Self Isolate from the
people that can Self Isolate? It is not
like they are truly Self Isolating if they are associating with me, a person
that can’t Isolate because work is not flexible? Remember Retail. For the record we have a person or several
people whose job it is to sanitize everything that people touch all day long
and cashiers that sanitize their workstation every transaction.

Okay update, Natural20 tried to read the post so I took it
down and stole her phone so that we could talk about it before she read
it. Not very mature, but I did not want
to be attacked for being wrong. I don’t
mind being wrong, I am wrong often, partially, rarely completely. But I knew I was wrong. By the end of the above I had already talked
myself into self isolating. By the end
of the day work called and told me that shifts had changed into three sets of nine
workers so that people would be limited that way and so I was not going to be
working that Tuesday as planned. I saw
the writing on the wall and I went to work anyway, not to work but to say hi
and buy some stuff and then never return . . . unless my shift actually made it
and was still on the schedule. And then
someone from another store tested positive for the virus and all our stores in
our chain closed. That was Wednesday. The Boss called and asked me if I had any
questions and I responded to him about the state of the store and the need to
get it ready for spring should that there are people left to work there and
people left who want to buy things. So, I
was selected to come in and get the store ready. It is not much, 6 hours a day five days a
week, but it is not nothing.
And Natural20 made a place for me in her home so I do not
need to go to Tim Hortons and write there.
It is not as good as Tim’s because the ambiance is not the same, but the
tea is free, and the bathrooms are in better shape. I still go to Tim’s every day—it is part of
that making connections with people. you
smile and ask how their day is going and they treat you better, but when things
go bad in the world and they close all of their customer seating and become a
take out only place it is important to keep going and letting them know, the
people who still work there, that you feel for their situation. I argued on Facebook that it is the chains
that you have less to worry about. They have
company wide mandates and protocols that tell them how they must act, and the
mother company will shut them down. But the
Mom and Pop stores they have more to worry about they might not have the
resources to keep to the same standards.
I know, because I work in a small chain store, part of the community and
big enough to have resources, I know the steps that they have gone in this new
world of the Pandemic. EI gives us 55%,
but our company will boost that by another 20% for the duration of the
pandemic, however that will last.
People are talking like it is going to be Our Great Depression. We will see.
One thing that might happen, is happening is that the USA is becoming a
more socialist nation by the second. And
the Virus may kill off the bulk of the most conservative people in the
world. Perhaps history will say that the
disease allowed us to be green.

- 1 ki to re-set from
prone or pounce half your movement away, to attack a target, one or the
other.

The
tiger stalks its prey quietly from the dense underbrush when it makes its move
it is to kill, there is no other option.

will get one free round of attacks on your target and may not target you until
the next round, because until you attack, they forgot you were there…
Effects
last only one round, before you must spend another 5 ki or attack. If you leave
the area people will remember that you were present but be confused about your
description or what you did.

so it becomes clear there is only two options it dies, or its attacker dies.

Bite costs 1 ki less to use, minimum 0 ki. If the battle ends and you have less
than 1 hp, you die.

When the Mantis engages its prey a feeling of doom falls
upon it, the Mantis is choosing its moment and until then every move the prey
makes, the mantis makes.
Make a contested Insight check vs. Deception of opponent if
successful the martial artist gains either +2 to their AC or a +2 to their
attack bonus for a minute. Spend a Ki to
get both. Increase the number of
opponents effected at 6th, 11th and 17th
levels
Opponent’s allies find your movements so indistinguishable
that they may believe that your prey is you, if you spent a Ki point above,
attacks against you may instead hit your opponent %50 chance.

Mantis Defensive Strike
The Mantis’ arms are armoured, when they attack it is a
defence, the prey cannot hit when it is engaged.
Any successful attack made by the Mantis Warrior imposes a
penalty equal to the excesses of their attack on the next successful attack
against the Mantis Warrior. e.g. Player
attacks a creature with an AC of 13 and hits with a 17, the additional 4 are
added to her AC for the next successful attack, possibly causing it to miss, a
critical would count as an automatic miss.

Mantis Stalking Stance
The Mantis stance is so still that the prey does not see it
until it is too late.
For 1 Ki the Mantis Warrior may become invisible (for up to
one minute, concentration)
In addition, the skin of the Mantis Warrior becomes
resistant to non magical, piercing, slashing and bludgeoning attacks.

When a Mantis catches its prey in the open, its large eyes
entrance its prey until it can do little but give up its life to the Mantis.
By spending 5 Ki points, any opponent that has been affected
by the Mantis Form becomes entranced, for one minute, and can do nothing
unless attacked.

Snake Form
The Snake sways studying its opponent until it is ready to
strike. When it strikes it is because it
has found the weakness of its prey.
Make a stealth check DC opponent’s Dexterity to reduce the
effectiveness of your opponent’s armour and shield, but not dexterity, by 2
Spend 1 or more Ki to increase dexterity by 2, up to 20*,
for one minute. At 6th, 11th,
and 17th level the racial maximum dexterity increases by 2 each.
6th level
Adamantium Fang Strike
The Snake’s fangs are strong and perpetually sharp, when it
strikes its attacks are true and penetrate their prey.
For 1 ki the Practitioner’s become fused with adamantium;
for one attack the Martial Artist may ignore all armour to hit the target and
when attacking, when attacking inanimate objects, the Martial Artist ignores
all hardness.
11th level
Venomous Death Strike
When the Snake strikes its victim, it knows that it is dead,
its venom coursing through its veins.
For 3 Ki, the Martial Artist’s attack, when it hits, by
passes the skin, muscle and bone and causes damage directly to its internal
organs, causing a critical hit. The
martial artists hands are covered in their ichor, skin unbroken.
17th level
Snake Soul Strike
Often the mere presence of the snake ready to strike will
cause its prey to surrender and be devoured; no resistance offered.
Once per long rest the martial artist can spend 5 Ki while
it performs a complicated series Martial Artist Katas (Acrobatics, Performance,
Athletics or Intimidation) with a DC of the creature’s CR. If successful, the display inflicts 10d10
damage to the target.

Monkey Form
The Monkey moves through the forest seemingly at whim,
capering up and down trees leaping from bough to bough only to land at random
precisely where it was headed.
The martial artist substitutes a move action for acrobatics
roll to move through his opponents and land beside his chosen target. If the roll exceeds the insight check of any creature,
he moves by they may not make attacks of opportunities and will be distracted
for that round making all attacks at -2.
As a bonus action, the martial artist may attempt to disarm
a distracted opponent with a successful Sleight of Hand check against the
opponent’s Insight check.
6th level
Monkey Leaping Stance
When the Monkey leaps into the trees it disappears and
chooses its own time and place to come down.
The martial artist at the end of its movement, will leap
into the air and spend 2 Ki and dimension door 60’ away. The martial artist must have at least 5’
movement available to accomplish this manoeuvre. If the Martial Artist has any attacks left,
they may use them now and if their Acrobatics check beat the target’s insight
check, the attacks are at advantage.
11th level
Monkey’s Raging Tantrum
The tenacity of the Monkey and its Strength are a thing to
behold but not experience.
When amid battle the Monk may use the ultimate expression of
improvised weapons, their opponents. Any
opponent that is their size or smaller may be thrown at another opponent up to
30’ away and cause both to suffer damage.
This attack will cause the monk to move 10’ towards another opponent
where they may use that opponent as a similar weapon. Grasping the target to throw ignores all
armour, natural or otherwise except magic and dexterity, but the intended
target still must be hit. Both weapon
and target must roll a dexterity saving throw to remain standing DC of the
attack roll. Creatures larger than the
monk take the damage as the monk vaults off them and must make the save or fall
prone. The attacks may continue if there
is movement left in the monk. This
attack frenzy costs 3 Ki. The monk may
still use their bonus action as normal.
17th level
Mad Monkey Attack Prana
When the Monkey is truly angered, it is best to be nowhere
near.
The monk centers themself and spends 3 Ki they may split
into three separate individuals with only one pool of Ki and one pool of hit
points. The monk may continue to act
until the Ki or HP pool is reduced to 0, then one or more of the selves must
rejoin the others. Rejoining has the
full effects of a short rest, but only refreshes 1d6 Ki/self absorbed.

Crane Form
The Crane raises its leg and wings spread looking as
vulnerable as it is graceful, this their opponents first mistake.
The use of step on the wind is extended by 10’ and is
perceived as actual flight. As soon as
the monk can move 60’ in a single move action they are able to take flight,
dropping below 60’/round drops them into a shallow glide dropping 20’ per round
until they land.
The first attack upon any opponent causes them to make a
dexterity save or fall prone DC of 8 + dexterity and wisdom modifier of the
monk, minimum of 10
6th level
Crane Wing Sweep
When the Crane lands among enemies it will whip the wind
around them to push them off balance.
The Martial artist draws the air around it and draws it into
a small but strong whirlwind that knocks all enemies down within 20’, for 3
Ki. The opponents must make a dexterity
save DC (8 + Dex + Wis mod)
11th level
Bill Spears the Fish
The crane sees the fish and spears it with its bill then
swallows it whole.
Any time the character approaches a prone figure they may
attack and use a Ki point to cause the target a constitution save DC (8 + Dex +
Wis mod) or take an automatic critical attack
17th level
Crane Dodges the Wind
The Crane is an expert flier and handles Changes in the wind
in expert style.
Any calculation that does not include your proficiency bonus
as a Monk, now does for a minute after you spend 4 Ki. This includes Initiative, Armour Class, and
Deflecting Missiles,
Crane Style should involve movement and possible limited
flight looking vulnerable but lightning fast attacks
The city of Awsland places of interest
Plot general outline
Get a job- routine expedition to ruins outside town
Choose a moral stance- resupply ruin expedition, mercenaries
want to push prices up and have organized an ambush on the road and want to
blame Kobolds
No matter what they have chosen to do, attack the caravan or
defend the caravan, the guild thinks they need to go elsewhere for the time
being. Luckily there is a quest that has been on the back burner for a few
months and the Guild of Navigators and Astrologers has seen, literally, and
they need a group of investigators to go there.
They need to establish a base camp outside the Ruins of Awsland and
begin looking for the legendary Vault of Relic.
Which almost everyone has heard of akin to the lost trove of Monte
Cristo, Oak Island, and King Solomon’s Mine.
Points of interest:
Outside the city there is a very large section of the ground
covered with termite hills. The hills
reach two meters tall and so are noticeable at a distance. Near this region there are a couple Ankheg
ambush sites. The bugs are hoping to
attack any large animal that comes to feed on the termites. The ankhegs have done this too.
There are a couple of bulette in the area that is in
between herds. The area is rocky, and
the sewer system has provided inconveniencing disruptions to their burrowing
and forced them above ground and as such has been a popular mating site. These creatures mate like bedbugs and if they
are interrupted, they will gladly dine on the interruption.
The wall, which is now just a low berm that encircles the
city, it is about 6 kilometers from the city center. The city was said to have filled the city and
then spilled over. There were four main gates,
and these are clear as large mounds there were four roads that went from the
outer walls to the city center, they are visible as wide raised mounds
The Necropolis, which is immaculately cared for even
now, although there are no one living here.
There are grave markers and tombs made with stone that has not been
taken to build other cities. The grounds
are kept, and the trees and grass has been trimmed.
Most of the buildings are gone, but there are a few isolated
structures mostly intact, although in ruin.
Many are occupied:
Building with Manticore. The top floor has long been ruined; the roof
is gone but it has provided the current resident a good place to lair. The home was originally a villa and they
employed undead guards who still guard the lower levels.
Building with Old Ogre. The Building was guarded by undead, but the
ogre took these out and used this area as a home. There are two older ogres here and one
younger Ogre. They are the source of the
ogres in the area. They negotiated with
the local hobgoblins resulting in Half Ogres.
On the other side of the Necropolis is a building that has
been ignored by the goblins, especially when their patrols disappeared. There is a Ettin in one of the ruins
that was formally guarded by undead. The
Ettin destroyed them.
There is a more impressive building in the outskirts of the
city, it was a library and the books and scrolls were returned to locations by
undead servants. The books have mostly
fallen to pieces, there area few treasures still located therein, but the upper
levels of the library have been taken over by a duo of Lamia they
currently have three children and will soon turn them loose. One of the books that is intact contains
pictures and descriptions of the original building of the city with
Illuminations of each building. The
Illuminations make the book quite valuable.
There is a book with ancient hymns that have a bardic spell
There are a few buildings that have colonies of gargoyles
on them. The residents either don’t know
about them or see them as additional protection. The gargoyles dine on small animals and some larger
and are given some treasure by the monsters where there is enough insight to
see the value.
There is a lake in the center of one of the spokes and it
dominates it. There is a waterfall as it
crosses one of the roads. There are a
lot of fish in this lake and some giant frogs too. But this is the only open water in the
city. The river starts to disappear
after it crosses the road. After a few
hundred meters it disappears entirely. The
area is a domain of a small water Elemental and a few mephits
too the Water elemental is content to
just be. He spawned here because this is
the largest lake this close to the river and not of the river; it is the
biggest lake not part of any river for hundreds of kilometers.
City Center. There
are several relatively intact buildings here.
Perhaps they were left to honour the city itself or perhaps because
looters were afraid of this part of the city.
The chapel. The
Chapel is wholly intact. There are
skeleton caretakers here keeping the inside and the outside in good
repair. And there is a wraith,
that protects it, with a maximum number of Spectres.
The Palace is currently the home of a medusa. It has
several rooms that are open to the elements which she farms. The Goblins had in the past made many
offerings to her, hoping that she would not hunt them. The goblins did not tell this to the invading
Kobolds, to their peril. The North wing
contains an entrance to the sewers which are mostly intact. There is a Minotaur possibly a few in the
sewers. They have been here for many years;
the first ones killed the maintenance squads and the sewers and the sewers
there fell into ruin causing the lake.
They learned.
Maintenance teams. Many of the people of this city were wealthy
and they were able to buy corpses of the poor which they had animated to take
care of their property, or to guard the buildings. These guardians lasted longer than city and
they are doing jobs that they did years ago.
The sewers and the Necropolis have many of these. The goblins learned of some of these and incorporated
it into their culture, for example they will drop bodies in the necropolis, and
these will be buried.
A few of the buildings house
minotaur families, they have access to the sewers from them, but one is the
home of an aging manticore.
The City was the home of a
large tribe of goblins. The tribe
included Hobgoblins and Bugbears. The
Kobolds attacked and defeated the hobgoblins and cowed the others, who joined
with the stronger force if the party attacks the goblins and the kobolds head
on, they will try to track the PCs down.
Their Dragonborn leaders are intelligent and well trained, some of the
Kobolds are stronger than they look, and they will be deadly.
If the characters stick
around in this area, they will have an encounter with a Yellow Dragon wyrmling
or three.
Yellow dragons are
a mix of Red and Green. Their Breath
weapon is a cloud of gas that fills an area like a green Dragon and causes
coughing and sputtering as it smells like rot, but when exposed to flame it
explodes, which the dragon will provide if there is no ignition source. Yellow Dragons prefer areas of open verdant
grasslands. They value animal above all
and will often be located around great herds.
As it grows in power it will often mate with these animals to make
half-dragons which they use to herd other animals. They grow jealous of other herds and will
hunt them down and kill them and those nearby.
The chapel is key, only
after the wraith is cleared from the building may it be searched without
harassment. There are plenty of rare
books there and there are many gilt and gold implements. And many priceless tapestries. A few of them show the city they way it was
in the early days of the First King of Awsland, King Awsland in fact. There is some No Sun writing on it. No Sun writing are words that only appear
when the two suns are eclipsed and the sky is blue, then the letters can be
read. It indicates the location of the
Vault. However, the Vault is an
extradimensional space located on a wall in the palace. But it requires some distinctive stonework to
be placed around the wall first, stone that is no longer there.
If the characters do not
discover the No Sun Writing, it will be, and the characters will be called to investigate
further.
The Characters will be sent
on a quest to find the stone that was looted from Awsland.
The Old man on the hut near
the city will warn them of this, if they ask why he lives close to the goblins
he says he and they have a truce, they don’t bother him, and he doesn’t kill
them. If asked about anything he will
give truthful answers. He is a First One
and he is watching the area and has been for a very long time H knows about No Sun writing and if allowed
to examine the tapestries, he will say so.
As a First One, he can read No Sun Writing without the No Sun part. He is also fluent in many dead
languages. If he reads the writing, he
will tell them that it is impossible to open the vault now, the writing says
only a Knight of Awsland can do so.
