Keylesh---
It has been a while since I last saw you. I was worried when I did not see you last
week at work. Lokbucl mentioned that you
were ill. I hope you are on the mend. I have good news to share!
-- Layvern of Causnaught
There is a bit of unpacking here. Lokbucl is an anagram of Bullock refers to
the pub, Relic’s Bullock, it is where you contact the Thieves Guild. Layvern and or Causnaught, is a code phrase
that you need to use with the guard at the bar in the last position on the
left. You need to work it in to the
first sentence in the letter and the counter sign is worked from the words in
the second sentence. E.g., it has been a while since I saw Layvern. Yes, I have not seen her for a week at
work.
The last two sentences suggest that they know about your
good news and they have instructions for you.
The Bullock is a dive of a pub. It is known for attracting a wide group of low-class
patrons. The beer is cheap and
plentiful. The food is hearty but bland,
fighting is discouraged; any fight that incurs more than 10 chits of damages
results in a permanent ban.
The room in the back of the pub contains a small antechamber
with a single guard at a desk and he asks you your name, if they give him the
wrong name, he shoots them with a heavy crossbow aimed at them under the
desk. If they answer truthfully opposed
insight/deception roll, she is let into the next door which included a
staircase to the ground level. On the
ground floor there is a larger room with three people with ceremonial robes and
white masks. They congratulate her of
entering the Guild of Mercenaries and they ask for a report. You get the impression that they already know
most of the answers, but they only stop you when they want specific
details. They thank her for her honesty,
and they request that she continue informing on the Mercenaries Guild in the
same way as she informed on the Builder’s Guild. Any questions? They inform her that she is much more useful
now and her reports will add more money to her shadow accounts. If she is in need of something and they can
get it for her, they will arrange for it to fall into her hands as usual. Her balance is currently 250 brass chits.
Outside the bar, she is accosted by a very large man wearing
chainmail and carrying a sheathed Longsword with gold filigree in the hilt and
an overwhelming smell of garlic. He wears
a dirty looking cloak over everything else hoping to disguise his worth. The words he will use to her are meant to
provoke and he will refer to her collar to identify her. Come over here Pussy, I got something for
you. If he gets a hold of her he will
mention that it is a shame such a graceful creature is bound to one man. Although he could be referring to one thing,
he is referring to her freedom price. Once
he gets her attention, the right way he will tell her that he has a way to
shorten her enslavement. He will tell
here that the caravan masters are making chits hand over fist and the amount
they spend on guards is tiny. He says
they need to pay a guild Mercenary their appropriate due and the guild has a
plan and he would be happy to tell her about it, if she wants to join in.
If she bites, metaphorically, he will tell her that there is
a plan to ambush the caravan that she is heading out on later this week. He tells her that everyone will be killed
except for a few survivors, to pass on what happened, so that the prices and
the costs of employing the guild will go up and the membership will get better
pay. Do you understand? If she agrees to the proposal, he will tell
her when the attack will occur and he will pay her an additional fifty more
brass chits, with an additional fifty more along with the hundred for full
pay. Then when she is about to leave, he
tells her one last thing, none of her are gonna survive, guild before
friends. He would be okay if she
collected their money after they were dead.
The ambush will occur after midnight on the third night out from Trandle’s
Stand.
If she goes back and informs to the thieves’ guild, they
note his description and tell him that he is Captain Tarloc and he has a long
rough history with the Guild. They also
tell her that he will likely betray her after the battle. They also note that her shadow balance has 50
more chits in it.
