Second Romance Plot

Second Epic Romance Subplot

Often when one player asks for something, another player thinks that it might be fun to do that too.  So after Stalking Jaguar asked for an Epic Romantic Subplot, Leaf asked for one too.  Bastard.  Subplots are difficult to create, they involve a lot of figuring out.  Two in a week of the same type that need be different and need have a certain bit of misdirection, because they are not fun otherwise.  With Stalking Jaguar, she will have a Lunar appear in the story and her future love interest at the same time.  The Lunar is the red herring, because they are mystically bound one to one to Solars, the players who know this will make assumptions and then the twist can be assured.  Love and romance is blind, literature says so, it is not—it comes about by association.  The lunar will seem to be there for her, but the Dragon Blooded, Mnemon Di-Yī will steal the show, because a dragon blooded Dynast offers more drama, of the Romeo and Juliet kind than a single Lunar.  Extroversion for and Introvert, not more Introversion.  Leaf's Player is and Extravert so an Introverted Romance story works best.  First one down what for the second?

What happens when one of the Lunars from the First age comes knocking and they remember what the last Solar was like?  What happens if the last solar was anything but kind to them?  What if they abused their position?  What if they decided that they needed a change and so they arranged for their Lunar mate to die?  Twice?

***

What about Mortals?  When a social character with the power of the Gods walks into the room, how can they not fail to dominate the situation.  The character counts all 10s in a roll as two successes, mortals only one; it is the touch of the gods that push things over the edge.

####

Solution, combine the two stories.  A mortal girl caught in the crosshairs of a Solar Social Character, they can't withstand the onslaught and they fall in a swoon for the powerful Exalt.  The romance ensues lopsided that it is and the mortal falls fully for the Character.  They consummate their love and things reach a head quickly.  Late in the night he awakens, in the room is an enormous Demon, and Panther like humanoid with a huge dripping maw filled with venom.  It points its massive silver sword directly at his head, the wiggle in the tip shaves him closer than a razor.  The beast looks him directly in the eye and berates him for targeting mortals like he always did.  They never had any defense against his Solar augmented charms.  He always did like an easy game.  Was he going to discard her like he always did before, hundreds of pregnant women in his wake?  But always leaving his divine mate barren, was I always too much of a challenge?

%%%%

I always find it difficult to introduce Lunars to a party.  Mostly because I don't know their rules as well as the Solars.  Their charms are different and they are shape hangers, so their charms are related to that more and so it is odd.  Also because they are mystically paired to each other there is an expectation that they will be around more often.  They are as strong as a Dawn Caste, the weakest one is as strong as a Dawn Caste.  The strongest one is more powerful.  It is like having a bonfire adding its strength to another bonfire.  Then there is the problem when you add an older Lunar to a group of Solars.  The older lunar, could potentially flatten them all, at once.  It is a easy out of a sticky solution when the enemies close in and a bunch of Lunars show up and defeat the sticky solution.

The solution is to keep them out of the game or to keep them weak.  My setting is perfect for that, with half of the Lunars being only a year old this means that most would be weak.  However, some could be strong, about half of them.  A few would be very strong and have many strong memories of the Solars the way they used to be.  So in my setting half of them are as old as the Solars, 150.  Two thirds of the rest are strong, but don't have real memories of the Solars, having died just after the Usurpation, 100.  The rest are truly ancient, but possibly just old enough to have to have run from the Solar's Call for help, 50.

The Lunar for Leaf is one that remembers his last incarnation and remembers the abuse.  Because, he asked for an epic romance subplot, which means he needs to overcome a real obstacle and there needs be fire.  It can't be easily overcome and his charms have to be swatted aside and removed from the picture entirely.

Two characters asked for a Romantic Subplot at the same time, they need be very different and equally powerful.  They are both dances and they are both must draw into different parts of the game.

The New World Order

A new world order is impossible to understand without knowing the old world order.  It is so old that our entire collective history only knows what it is and we don't see it as changing because it has always been.  When people say a New World Order, people become antsy thinking that it means that it is a bunch of people telling them, the common people, what to do and it is, as much as the Old World Order was.

The Old World Order was a world where our leaders sat looking at the other world leaders and conspired to set their people in a project to kill the other world leaders and their people. And vice versa.  First it was one tribe against the tribe in the next valley.  Then it was one town  against the town across the river, then it was one people against the people over the mountain, then it was one religion against another.  As we moved from one survival unit to another survival unit.  As we moved from City States to Empires.  As Empires moved to Nation States.  As Nation States moved into Alliances.  It ended with Alliances poised to destroy other Alliances, ideologies vs. ideologies, Capitalism vs. Communism.  That was the way things were for human history, that is the way that we were comfortable looking at the world and it was the way that all the little people, ie all the people, hated looking at the world, because it meant wars.  Wars meant destruction and death and not usually for the leaders, but always for the people.  It ended when two massive armies, two arsenals that could destroy the ecosystem of the planet in half an hour and one of them blinked and realized that one was more right than the other and stopped posturing.

And suddenly there was one side holding all the cards.  And then the game changed.  And then people rushed to create the only world that they knew because change and the idea of something different scared them.

You see, all this time the world was changing.  Not the world but the technology.  The means of attack and fighting brought new peaceful technologies too.  It brought economic ideas and new ways of doing things.  It changed the world underneath the Old World Order.  Trade alliances formed and new ideas spread on each side.  Each side learned to trade with each other and both parties lives improved together.  As they improved they grew closer together and their economies became linked.  The quality of life within the tied nations improved.  Poorer nations joined the trade networks and the low wage jobs went to those nations and those poor economies improved and the wealthy ones got more inexpensive goods.  The wealthy nations produced high value items and exported them to the poor nations, the lives of these people increased in value and soon they were sending low value work to poorer nations too.  The economies learned very slowly that cooperation worked better than opposition.  This was the seed of the New World Order.

When the Ideologies blinked and surrendered an opportunity presented itself.  The opportunity to cooperate.  Co-operation, is the New World Order.  The New World Order is about understanding that everyone is connected.  When did you first realize that everyone was connected?  The world began to realize it in the 1960s when the United States and the Soviet Union almost went to war over the installation of ICBMs in Cuba.  I was not around, but everyone held their breath who was alive, all over the world, because if there was war, the entire world would die.  I first understood the inter-connective nature of the world when I learned about Acid Rain in school.  I learned that the pollution in the US midwest impacted us, and our pollution impacted Maine.  I was like nine.  When you make this realization you have a chance to understand that it does not stop there.  There is not just one connection.  Years later the world came together in Montreal and banned the production of CFCs that were destroying the Ozone Layer around the world.  Collectively the nations of the world came together and stopped something that was hurting everyone.  Co-operation.

The New World Order is not about the Illuminati controlling the world leaders, it is about the world leaders being common people and working with the other common people to protect everyone else by co-operating with everyone.

Missing it

The wind picks up a little in the dusty empty street in the early morning.  The wind turns a few discarded bits of litter in a gentle cyclone as he rides his horse into the urban canyon.  The clip clopping of the hooves on the cobblestones underlines the emptiness.  The streets are empty.  The people are in the fields toiling before the day gets too hot, or is it some religious holiday.  Which it is needs some investigating.…

The door to the tavern creaked open with his push, the sound of the creak drew the attention of the patrons.  The usual crowd was all here, the field hands and tradesmen had all arrived almost an hour ago.  Spending four motes of personal essence to power a Presence excellency, he tosses a small pouch of silver onto the bar, the chinking of silver coin spills over through the opening.  "Innkeeper, a room for me for the night, a meal and drinks for your patrons…"

The wind through the trees rustled the leaves of the stand of oak that the archer stood under.  The underside of the leaves was exposed to the sun, a lighter green.  He approaching army was clear to see from this point, but the archer knew that unless they were looking for her, they would not see her, even though her clothing was quite bright.  She drew the arrow back waiting for the wind to subside, the wind pushed the meadow grasses down before the marching men.  Loose.  She spent ten motes of personal Essence so that the arrows multiplied in number to make her single shot to appear to be an ambush by a hundred trained men.  The arrows sliced flesh and bled men.  They raised shields and sighted her frame against the trees…

I want to roleplay.  It has been so long, since the summer, the early summer, before I moved into the burbs.  I have run my games for all that time, weekly and bi-weekly.  But it is not enough.  I want more.

Alternative Facts

How fast does language change?  On Friday last week I did not watch the Inauguration of President Trump.  I did not watch Obama's either.  I heard that the crowds were not the biggest and that they were the biggest.  I heard that people who said it was not the biggest crowds were lying and that people who defended the people who said the crowds were that largest were using Alternate Facts.

Then I heard an interview on Thursday where a Politician was speaking about what they were doing in the job.  Then there was an interview the next day and the rival politician said that the first politician was using Alternative Facts.

That was Six days.  Six days.  I do not pay attention to a lot of news.  I don't listen to a lot of new media, I don't have a TV.  I don't even have a radio.  Six Days.  I can see the benefit of the phrase right away.  Next time a co worker tells the boss something that is not true, instead of telling my boss that they are lying, which sounds so childish, I can say that they are using Alternate Facts.

Donald Trump uses Alternative Facts.  Facts are solid binary things, they are true or they are not facts.  Alternative Facts are not facts.  When we read the dystopia in the book 1984, the people there used Double Speak.  Solid proof that Trump and the Right Wing are bad news.  They don't use facts, they use Alternative Facts which are more powerful than simple facts.  I think I am going to use this phrase a lot.

So my Girlfriend does Energy Work.  I was not on board.  Neither was her husband.  I have an open mind, not so open that my brain falls out.  I am skeptical and I have great critical thinking skills, so I like to think that I have an advantage.  I said I have an open mind.  That is important.  It means when people telling that they do this thing I nod a lot and agree with them and I look into it and then make up my mind.  Like when a friend told me that Fluoride was bad to have in tap water.  I did not dismiss her out of hand and I investigated it and came to new conclusion from all the evidence present.  My conclusion was that fluoride in tap water was not harmful, but that with all the other products in use in *OUR* society it was not necessary.  That was in our wealthy country 90% of the people don't need fluoride in the water, 10% probably did need it.  In poorer nations and areas Fluoride was necessary to be added to the water.  The claims that the friend had told me were the reasons for getting rid of the fluoride were completely unfounded.  So that is what I mean about open minded.

Medical science often forgets about the placebo effect, except when they are trying to dismiss non medical treatments.  But it exists and they know it.  For example if people use science and something they believe in to heal, they will heal better than if they just use science.  That said they need to understand that they were not healed by the thing they believe in, but by the combination.  I am super skeptical, I don't even believe that medicine is going to help me until it does, which means I never receive any placebo effect any time at all.  I don't really believe that pain medication is going to work, it often doesn't.

So my girlfriend does Energy Work.  I am super skeptical.  But she is my girlfriend and this means I am walking a tightrope around the issue and she knows that I am super skeptical and she tells me about the work she does but for the longest time did not try it on me.  This may have been because I am a difficult patient or because she found it difficult to do it when I was with her because we were in the same room and there were other things we could be doing.

I get it.  She helps people.  She helps them quit smoking and she reduces their anxiety and depression and I think it is because people don't talk about the underlining issues in their life and when they do, it stops being important and goes away.

So she tackled something of mine about a month ago, my obsession with women in my life from twenty years ago that I could not get out, anger and loss and other emotions that were hanging around all the time.  I let her talk to me about this and I stayed awake for it—mobile phone session and I was walking somewhere New Years Day.  It took her about an hour and a half but she talked the subject to death in my mind and and the problems that were associated with it are gone too.  It has been four weeks.  Maybe there is something to this thing that she is doing.  Not sure the mechanism.  But it is not completely woo.  She is not doing Homeopathy.  It is not Reiki.  It is not aromatherapy.  It is not something normal.  It is like a faster, much faster cognitive therapy.  If it does the same thing as cognitive therapy, but takes much less time, then it is good.  I remain skeptical, but it is working.

My girlfriend only occasionally reads my blog these days, she is very busy.

Here is her website and she offers a free demo for right now, and she is offering to teach people as well as treat people.  I will always remain skeptical, but I offer you to make your own decision, because I am growing to accept that there is something to this.

Fake News is Real News; Real News is Fake News

News is the fall of society these days.  People have more power to create and broadcast news.  You can self publish anything.  You can use Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and many others to braodcast your thoughts.  There are Internet sites that post fake news that looks fake but has a high quality feel to it.  And there are sites that post news that is not real, but seems to be real.

The Onion probably was not the first, but it sticks in my mind as a website that posted comic prices of news that were pretty obviously fake, if you had a working brain.  Like the bird whose mating call was "Fuck-You" and it liked to mate with camera lenses.  They also post stuff about what people are thinking and events that involve ordinary non-news worthy people.  It is obvious that it is fake to most people.  There is the program on the CBC, "This is That" that talks about five news items in a half hour.  Five preposterous stories, like a closing Calgary Aquarium decides to have a barbecue to get rid of its animals.  The story is preposterous, but people heard it on the CBC and thought it was real.  It is because it was modeled like it was a news program.

There are three problems that have created the state we are in right now and they are as follows.  1) Poor Critical Thinking skills, 2) Partisan Politics and 3) lazy journalism.

Lazy journalism.  What does it take to verify a store that comes off a website?  Not much usually a judicial application of common sense and critical thinking and maybe a phone call to an expert.  Maybe all it takes is to read beyond the headline.  If you don't have e expertise on a subject ask someone who does.  Back when the Particle Accelerator first started up, it was mentioned that it might be possible to create tiny black holes.  And people thought that the world would becoming to an end.  Tiny black holes last less than a second and can't hurt a fly, but people did not know that, so they were scared.  Journalists don't know that and so they just repeat what they hear and they did not fact check.  Journalists are taught to present a balanced view of a subject, but not a weighted view.  They will report both sides of an issue as if each side is equally worthy.  So they will put a crank beside an expert, never mind that in reality there is no equality.  Climate Change, Flouride in water, vaccines and Autism, and many others.  Journalists will often simplify something to get the point across and lose the entire point.  They are the deliverers of news to people and they need to be aware of these things.

Critical thinking.  It is a very hard thing to teach.  The method of teaching this is difficult and it is done through math and science, but also by being critical of your betters.  Ask for clarification, ask for the proof.  Ask questions.  Do not except 'because', the words 'I don't know' are not the end of learning, but the beginning.  Ask yourself when you read something in the news, hear something, if it makes sense.  If it does make sense, then ask yourself why it makes sense.  If I'd doesn't, then ask what does not make sense.  You can research the topic and you educate yourself on the matter.  After a while you can trust some sources of news, but don't accept blindly, check up on them and verify what you are reading to make sure it is still correct.  Recognise that you have a bias and your bias will lead you to accept something that might not be true, so be critical of yourself too.  Sometimes things are unclear in your mind sat if something is correct, replace nouns with other nouns if you are unsure about a moral argument.  Test and reevaluate.  Critical thinking is an active listening skill.  Journalists need to do it, but you do too.

Partisan Politics.  People fall into echo chambers where they believe that their own viewpoints are correct because that is the only thing they hear.  Constant reinforcement makes you think that when someone is telling you something different, that they are lying.  Or foolish.  It is hard to think of yourself as being somehow corrupted by bias, but everyone is.  If you think that you are not, you are wrong.  Yes you.  Me, I am biased and therefore I am blinded by that bias.  Sometimes because I believe in what I know, I present my truth with a force of will and I can be wrong and I bring others down with me.  But, I also try to include people with different views in my social networks, and I mean strong differences backed by strong will as well, ones that you can't swat away easily.  And if you don't have a strong opposition in your circle, recognize that and understand it.  As a secular humanist, I know that there are no strong god believers in my network and I rely on others to tell me their point of view.  I listen to a couple podcasts that do this.

So know where you are weak, know your strengths, know your biases.  Know your news sources biases too.  Be critical about your surroundings and yourself.

Part of this critcalness is looking at when someone makes a claim of falsehood.  As a friend once said to me, when you point with a finger at something or someone, you are pointing three fingers right back at you.  When someone says someone is lying, pay attention; someone is lying and it may be the person who is informing you of this fact.  If someone tells you that they are telling you the truth in a news story, listen carefully; all news stories are presented as the truth automatically, if someone is drawing attention of this to you, they might be the liars, so pay attention.

Someone told me once that fluoride was bad and should not be in the drinking water.  I asked if they had a source and they gave me three websites as proof.  I looked at them and I followed up on their sources.  All three websites were self referencing, which means they relied on their own articles to prove their point of view.  If I said that there is a teapot inbetween the orbits of Neptune and Uranus and showed you three websites that made the same claim, but each one referred to each other as proof of their veracity it is a weak proof.  If there are a hundred articles that refer to each other it is also weak proof.  If it is two websites that refer to two Independant sources, that is stronger proof.

If someone tells you that he heard there is a teapot in space, near Neptune, does not mean it is truth either, even if they say that astronomers know there is a teapot out there.  You need to ask which Astronomers?  If they can't tell you then they are not reliable.

Fake news sites tend to be of two sorts, they are easy to verify that they are fake, it will say so at the bottom or they are partisan misinformation sites and they will tell people that other sites are wrong or biased; the information they present usually flies in the face of the majority.  And they are preaching to the converted.  Be critical.

Then there is Trump.  He is mystifying.  He says things and does things that are perpendicular to reality and you have to accept things that don't make sense just to keep up and he has a lot of flashy news sites that back up his views.  He is creating his own common sense and at its underlying basis is that the world is not complicated, people who say it is are lying.  Believe the simple truth.

Nothing is simple.

Caranus Astrology

Caranus constellations

In a world where astrology works, the constellations are very important.  It is complex, you need to know which star you were born under.  You need to know where each of the six moons were at that time and you would need to know where the three suns were too and which was dominant. Lastly you need to know where the planets are too.  And then you need to know where things are when you make your prediction.  Then you add comets and other things like falling stars.  It all becomes very complicated.  Particularly because most stars are not visible to the naked eye, so horoscopes tend to be very general and not very accurate.  There are priests that specialize in fate magic and they can tell you what star you were born under, precisely by telling them three or four significant events, (time and place) the more significant the better.

There are forty-eight different major constellations and one hundred eight minor constellations.  The major constellations fill up about 30° of night sky, the minor ones fit between the majors and they are all named.  The stars are denoted by the placement within the constellation and by their brightness.  Sometimes just the one as most stars are as mentioned before not visible by the eye.  Many of the stars change in brightness at times, some regularly others once but most never.  It all means something.  The aforementioned priests who specialize in these predictions have an expensive orrery and countless books that show each constellation with notes as to the importance of things related to that constellation.  Horoscopes used for nobility tends to be more accurate because the priests have better tools and better magic.

The poles are dominated by two major constellations apiece.  There are three minors between them.  The next section of the sky has six major constellations and the next has ten, and the equator has twelve.  Due to the size of the world and also due to the two major continents being placed primarily within one one hemisphere or the other the equatorial regions are familiar with both though.  And a necessity, the priests who make horoscopes know them too.

The equatorial constellations are called: Mountain, Peacock, Beehive, Fish, Hatchling, Cat, Comet, Archer, Cow, Wheel, Pheonix and Spear.  The mid low latitude: Cart, Boat, Crane, Boar, Sword, Cloud, Net, Snake, Plow and Tree.  The mid high latitude: Gull, Drake, Serpent, Rabbit, Hearth and Hammer.  The two Northern pole: Wyrm and Bear.  The Southern low latitude: Scythe, Bale, Castle, Wyvern, Hut, Flower, Chariot, Horse, Storm and Harp.  The Southern high mid latitude: Windmill, Dragon, Sphinx, Scorpion, Gauntlet, Rat and Warrior.  The Southern pole: Crown and Rope.  The 108 minor constellations are all named as well.  There are a number of open and closed clusters in the sky and faint nebula.  They all serve to flesh out the major constellations.

A complete horoscope would include the birth star and the location of each celestial body at that time, the current location of those bodies when the horoscope is taken and the position of those when the events are to be made.  Momentary events or unexpectant transient celestial objects can cause a disturbance to horoscope.  Many spells that priests use to cast horoscopes reveal these nuances as they happen, but future changes are clouded in obscurity except by extremely potent magic.

Five days Forward, Fifty Years Back

The forty-fifth President of the United States has been working now for about five days.  Five days and he has already put a muzzle on the Environmental Protection Agency.  He did this by telling them they needed government approval to speak in public.  Which is what a recent Prime Minister did in Canada recently.  He then approved a controversial pipeline that was cancelled because it represented too great a risk to the environment.

This is my prediction.  One day soon some controversial project will be approved and someone will point out that there was no one saying that it would be bad for the environment.

It is cheaper for business not to pay to keep the environment safe, but if it is not paid for when the damage occurs, or rather if the damage is prevented in the first place, it will have to be paid for when the mess has to be cleaned up.

Example time: carry a dish of water from one sink around your room back to the sink and put all the water into the sink.  If you spill it you have to pick up all the water and put it back in the sink.  You have to take the water out of the mop, out of the dish cloth, out of the rug; it all has to come out.  The EPA tells you that you should not fill up the dish all the way so the spills are less.  They might say you have to put the water in a covered container for transport so it won't spill.    Water is simple, it is not toxic to the environment, no one cares you spilt it in your house, but imagine if it is oil or chemicals or liquified human waste—you would not want any of those to be spilled in your house.

The EPA costs money, but it saves more money.  In the above example, if you had to carry a third of the material in a double sealed thermos and had to take three trips, you would save more time doing that than putting it in an open container filled to the brim after you spend time cleaning up your house.

That president also said that he would not mind if the USA began torturing its prisoners.  He also said that he was going to put a stop to admitting Refugees for 120 days and afterwards he was going to stop admitting refugees from some Islamic countries, Sudan, Yemen, Syria and others.  It would be noted that the perpetrators of the 911 terrorist plot were from Saudi Arabia and were not refugees.  The countries on the ban are not American allies, but it is ironic that the American allies are responsible for most of the attacks in America.  It could be argued that Americans have performed more attacks on these countries that could be labeled as terrorist attacks.  Drone attacks that drop bombs and shoot people are a form of terrorism, just one that uses advanced technology instead of low technology.

Trade prediction.  Trump will stop companies from leaving the States, but those companies will need to import foreigners into America to work those jobs, because Americans won't want to work them.

They will build a wall to keep the Mexicans out of their country, from crossing the boarder illegally, but the idea that they are coming by bus across the desert is false.  They come by bus, airbus; they fly in and they land in big airports.  They will never see the wall.  The foreign workers are busy taking jobs away from Americans that don't want them.  They don't want them because they don't pay much and the hours are too long and the work is too hard.  Americans don't want to do a job that requires them to work 72 hours a week for pay that is substandard and is physically demanding.  No one does.  They would rather not, but they are working for a family in another country.  Free trade employs these people in their own country and allows them to raise the standard of living in the entire nation.

Once upon a time made in Taiwan and South Korea meant that the goods were cheap and low quality, because that is where the inexpensive goods were made, then it was China, now it is Bangladesh.  China is now making computers, iPhones and cars.  China is soon to be the biggest economy in the world.  This is what free Trade does.  Free Trade also intertwines our economies together.  A linked economy means that when war occurs, or suffering occurs, the effects are felt by both.  If China has strong economic links with the World, it is not going to go to war with the world.  North Korea, has very few links to the world and it is constantly threatening to go to war with the world.

This new president is damaging the environment and damaging the world.  Moreover, it is hurting itself for very short term gain.

Black Sun Part II

Black Sun: a Start

I was never one of the first at anything.  I was not the first Solar, I was not even the first from my part of the world.  I was not the best Night Caste.  The only real claim I ever had was that I was very good at surviving and hiding.  I was in the middle of the pack in every way.  I met with the Unconquered Sun, Luna, the Maidens, Autochthon and Gaia in a group and never on my own.  There were all told 300 of us, 60 of each Caste and there were 700 Celestial Exalted.

The way you read it in the history books it was like we Exalted then we beat the Primordials and then we established the Solar Deliberative; that is just wrong, but it is a convienent lie that they like to tell the young and the newly Exalted.  It was not like that at all.  First of all there was a lot of time between the first Solar Exalt and the 300th.  That is nothing when you think that we were the generals and the leaders of the armies and there were no armies when I first Exalted.  There was the brothel pit, with the Terestrials constantly fucking in it.  How do you get a million soldiers? Put their thousands in a pit and have them fuck for a century and then have their children fuck for a century more.  There was a huge training time before we fought our first battle.

Autochthon he was plain when he told us what was what.  His brethren were a lot more powerful than all of us put together, if he wanted to he could crush us all without a thought, but he did not want to, because we were precious to him.  He told us that he made our exalted soul shard, each personally and he created a God whose sould job it was to administer them, Lytek.  He told us many things including that when this shard was added to our Human Souls it created a special person who was capable of limitless possibility.  He said that it was that limitlessness that was necessary to defeat his brothers and sisters in battle.

He told us why he had made us.  It was because Everytime he made a race of people to populate the world, they were wiped out carelessly by his brothers.  First his people he made were not sentient, but later they gained that and then they exceeded his last creation.  Each try had been wiped clean from the world and he had to start over.  It sounded a little petty in my ears like a tempertantrum, but then it was clear that the next time they decided to clean house, it would be the humans who disappeared.  The ashfalls and the rain of blood and fire was merely unpleasant compared to what had happened in the past, like rivers turned to acid and then back again.  In the past it was worse, the air was turned to smoke for a day or so and everything died.  One day one of his brothers thought the world might look better flipped on its head and everything died.  He and his sister, Gaia, was worried that it was going to happen again and soon so he made a pact with the Gods and he fashioned us.

As I said there was a lot of work to do.  For a hundreds of years we trained; for hundreds of years we built and fashioned weapons for an army of millions; for hundreds of years we prepared.  Very unlike what people think that we did.  And people and friends died.  People know the roles, the names of the Heroes who died in the Primordial War.  School children learn their names and recite them.  They learn our names and they honour us.  They call it honour, but they don't praise the ones who died before the war.  There is not an army in creation at any time of peace or war that has not had casualties training.  Our bodies, the Exalted bodies were more durable and stronger and more powerful, but that does not mean that we did not die; we did die, but it was not in the way that Mortals died, it was in ways that Exalted died.  Autochthonous said for us to learn to fight the powers, we had to have real challenges and this meant the real threat of death.  He provided that threat.  Perhaps it was that we remembered the brutality that we endured to become strong enough to defeat his brethren, that he decided to remove himself years after the war, before we thought to take revenge.

When the Exalted came back, after they re-Exalted, they had the memories of their former incarnation, better to learn the mistakes that lead to their deaths. I remember one who had not entered the Role of Heroes, the accounting of those who died in the War.  There was one named Ashkaas, a Dawn Caste who moved to fight a danger that would have destroyed his unit a danger that would have obliterated a village they were in.  He fought and died so that they could remove the innocent from the path.  He is not on the Role and he was not the only one.  The gods and the two others seem to forget why we are here, to protect the innocent.  Of course my nievity is obvious in retrospect, the gods wanted to play with the big toys, Gaia wanted her body safe, Autochthon wanted his creations to last, but none of them were concerned for the individuals that we came from.

After the Terestrials had finished pushing out a few generations of soldiers we began to train them.  Each of us took thousands of them and trained them, soldiers and assassins, craftsmen and sorcerers.  We took those first million Terestrials and turned them in a few short decades into the greatest forces that had ever been seen.  These soldiers would take on the foot soldiers of our enemies while the Celestials would take on the generals and the Primordials themselves.  I myself, along with most of my Caste were the ones that killed and took over souls of the Primordials and learned their movement and weaknesses, because it would be foolish to rely on Autochthon and Gaia for that information.  We stalked the streets of Yu-Shan ferreting out our goals and interests.  Before reporting to our circles and then to the planners.

Autochthon built in the relationships to our souls, saying that we would be drawn to work in these groups and at our abilities would compliment each other.  I will always remember my circle, we were Exalted all from the The same region of the world, we had all had been instrumental to our villages making the Hecatomb Sacrifice.  We each were one of the first of our caste, but not the first either.  We worked well together right in the beginning and we saved each other many times while training.  And there were the the Lunars.  We were each paired with one, one that was to be our mate.  It was in the design. We were told that Luna had wanted it that way and in a way it made sense.  The exalted of the Sun and the Moon were mated just as the Sun and the Moon were mated.  For my part, I was attracted to my mate right as soon as I saw her.  Which was a little odd, because I have always been attracted to men and she was not.  Privately she told me the same thing, such was the power of the mystical pairings.

While my circle and I were worked well together, we trained for years in this way, I never quite worked as smoothly with them as I did with my mate after only a few months of introduction.  Her name was Saljina, and she was from the West.  Her totem was of a bat, but she quickly learned to take the forms of hundreds of animals.  Together we crossed Creation spying on our targets and sometimes taking them out quickly and silently.  Other times we worked as part of a larger team, five Solars and five Lunars, we were a formidable force.  Our Twilight and No-Moon castes worked tirelessly to out fit our group.  They practiced their skills by making Jade for the Terrestrials then moved on to us.  Their art perfected, they produced some of the best early wonders, they in no way were matches of the creations made exalts with a thousand years to perfect their designs, but they were good enough for the job at hand.  I still treasure those over the ones that came later.

Once we were fully trained we began to work on the masses of troops that were building up.  We trained the Terrestrials.  We trained mortals.  We trained ourselves too.  There was no point in being less prepared than we could be.  When we were ready, finally ready the troops had been moved all over Creation and trained and equipped.  We knew, that when it began, everything would change.  There were about a million Terrestrials, all equipped and trained.  There were the 700 Celestials and there were millions of mortals.  There were a million Dragon Kings and there were millions of animals too.  It was their fight as much as it was ours.  Ironically, it was the people we fought for who could not fight in this war, unable to because the Primordials had made them that way.

The first part of the battle was to distract them, the Primordials.  We had to fight them and make them notice us.  We had to kill the major and middling souls of the Primordials.  Autochthon explained it to us.  We could not even hope to kill one of the Primordials even if we could attack one with all the power of a thousand times what we had; it could not be done.  But each Primordial had lesser versions of himself, aspects of their personality that existed separately of the main body.  Each of these bodies contained a portion of the Primordial's souls.  Each one had about eight to thirteen souls, each Primordial had twenty or thirty souls.  Each one of those lesser beings had a different configuration of souls and so each had different personalities and differences from the main, they were known as Third Circle Demons.  They each in turn created different aspects that had two or three souls, Second Circle Demons, and lastly each of those had an infinite number of beings with only one soul, First Circle Demons.  Autochthon explained that there was one soul that was only shared once with one of their lesser beings.  This soul was called the fetch soul, and the being the Fetch Demon.  Each Primordial was invulnerable, except if the Fetch was killed, then it would die too.  The Primordials knew this flaw and were very secretive about which demon was the had the soul of the Primordial.  Even Autochthon and Gaia would not reveal this to us, so it was very necessary to draw the Primordials into believing that there was a real threat to them, so that they would hide their most important soul.

The war was completely one sided for almost five years; the draw of the Games of Divinity that they played was so complete.  It was only after the first of the Third Circle demons died that enough of the Primordials took notice that they lashed out upon Creation at the most obvious targets they new about, not the humans, but the Dragon Kings.  Each team redoubled its efforts to corner and kill Third Circle Demons.  It was then that we noticed which Third Circle Demons was moved behind into protective positions.  The Primordials that took to the field were always victorious, what Autochthon told us was truth, five teams on each one in the field always ended with all twenty-five Solars and twenty-five Lunars dead.

The last ditch attack in the war was to storm Yu-Shan and destroy as many of the Third Circle Fetch Soul demons we had identified, we had found thirteen that we knew where they were hiding.  The plan was to move a large force in and to send small strike teams of twelve Celestial Exalts to each location, five Solars, Five Lunars and two Sidereals.  The force of nearly  one hundred thousand Terrestrials stormed into Yu-Shan in a dozen locations and began the last conflict in the war.  The battle was a gambit and it contained the bulk of the survivors that had started the war.  Ultimately, the battle was a success, five Fetch Demons died, taking five Primordials to their doom and the realization that the rest were mortal too, stopped the conflict there.  The price of the war was high on our side, fewer than one in ten Celestial exalt that started the conflict lived through to the end.  The Terrestrials faired worse, where one in a hundred lived.  Some of the the Lunars and Solars had exalted and were killed again before the end.

My circle lived through the worst of the great battles against the Primordials and we only failed at the very end.  I failed.  I could not save them.  I should have died with them.  They were not the only ones to die in that battle.  Four of my circle died and all of our Lunar mates died as well.  We knew the risks, but it seemed like the price was too high.  The fetch demon we fought was being protected by its Primordial.  We killed it, though in the very end and the Primordial fell from Yu-Shan and it fell through Creation making a very large hole all the way through.

The quiet that came at the end of the war was palpable.  I just wanted to head home and rest, but I had no family.  They had all died years before the war started.  I had no connection left to the people there.  Moreover, the devastation that was wrought upon the region had destroyed most of the terrain where I grew up.  The river had moved.  The ravine where I sacrificed my Hecatomb was bigger and filled with water.  The sea had moved further away.  The forests covered more of the land and the Savannas were infertile.  For being victors in the war, I felt that we had lost.  I was not alone in that sentiment.

Truthfully, few that entered the war left alive and those that did live were not fully intact. A few could not carry on after the war, but most of us carried on. There was a wave of Exaltations following the war and these new exalts would be the ones that would rebuild Creation.  I dedicated myself to making sure the boarders of Creation remained intact from the spawn of Primordials, who could now only be invited back into Creation, I would not have the sacrifice of my fellows tarnished in any way.

Black Sun Part I

Black Sun a beginning.

The sunrises of youth are different from those of a man in his last years, but more so for Komoto Undoro of the Sookmoia Tribe.  In my youth things were very different.  I was a youth and not much past my twelfth year when I heard the Call, the great God of his People had made it known that he wished for praise and service done on to him by a sacrifice of one hundred head of cattle, each of the hundred cattle must be taken through raids and each of the cattle had to be taken and sacrificed to him at once and burned to him.  The God was Ahlat, god of Cattle and of War.  It made sense, Ahlat wanted his warriors to prove themselves in battle with cattle.  He was not asking for death of people, even though it was clear that this would be the result.  All together the tribe had less than twenty cattle, so it was clear that who ever was going to make the sacrifice had to work fast and work hard to keep the herds he stole.  I remembered everything about that day.  The sky was green at sunset and the brief rain that pelted the area was blood red, no it was blood. But better blood rrrtrrxrthan stones—that had happened before.

Late that night, the tribe was raided and the raiders took half of the cattle before they were pushed back.  Ten cattle was not enough to survive on, the milk of the cows they took was mixed with the blood from the bull to make a hearty mixture that gave strength to the people, but there were too few cattle now and people would go hungry.  Raiding parties were formed, but I was too young to participate and there were taboos about women raiding.  They went without me, but I followed and watched.  I saw them fight and I saw people die, but the cattle they got back only numbered five.  They would have to raid again.  When we got back we saw that other raiders had captured more cattle from us.  I saw where this was going and I saw what I could do.

The first step was to look around.  I spent some time wandering the area when I was younger.  I knew some spots that I was warned not to go near, there was a few ravines that filled with water when it rained and a tribe that sheltered there had drowned years ago.  It was the dry season, but that did not mean anything, the Primordials often changed the rules, the weather, at a whim.  Nowhere was ever really safe—there were stories of things like mountains falling on plains and smoking mountains emerging from swampy fens, or worse.  Last week's green sky and rain of blood was normal.  The ravine was taboo to everyone, everyone obeys the taboos so I knew it was safe, unless it was a living ravine.  There was a lot of chance everywhere.  I investigated the ravine closer and saw that it was perfect for my needs.  I could fence off the end and there was a pool of water within.

The second part of my plan took some time.  I carted away and cut down tall grasses in the savannas and stored them in the ravine.  I did this for over a month.  It was in this time that my tribe became desperate and recruited me to raid with them a youth and a girl, times were tough they said and i had to do my part.  It was a valuable experience because I learned a lot and I had to kill people.  It was not a highlight, but a necessity.  The night raids were ultimately fruitful and we captured cattle so that we were where we started from and we took a few more to be safe.  The tribe was tired and they saw correctly that they would have a hard time keeping just those.  I was allowed to go off and play, of which the elders and my parents were disappointed; they had high hopes for me to join with the other warriors and be just like a man.

I had a higher agenda.  The stores of food complete and the strategy I had in my head was refined, I set off to watch the other tribes in the area and I assessed which had the most cattle and the poorest defenses.  Then on a moonless night I put my plan into action.  I watched from my vantage point and headed out to the first camps that went out to raid another.  I then stole behind them and headed to their corrals.  I saw that this village had already accumulated fifty head in addition to their thirty cattle they started with.  So many cows they did not have enough warriors to guard the entire perimeter.   I snuck into the village and out leading two cows.  I headed along the dry riverbank where the stones were laid bare and I passed over the clay beds dry and hard and I put them in e ravine.  Each night I would head out and each day I would feed and guard and sleep.  At the end of a month, every village and tribe had been hit for a couple cattle, some more than once.  My own tribe I stole in twice, because I did not want to make people suspicious.

One month I had sixty  cows and I was becoming bold, but the villages around had begun to talk about a spirit that drifted into camps and evaporated cattle under watchful eyes.  There was a story that the Primordials were striking cattle dead by picking them up and exploding them in the sky, that was why it rained blood.  I was becoming arrogant with my skills that I thought I possessed and I looked at the supplies that I had stockpiled.  There was not enough for even a week for the cattle and the dung and piss was starting to contaminate the water.  I knew that I did not have enough time to continue as I was doing and I had to take a risk and grab more.  So far, I had grabbed all my cattle without hurting anyone, but a riskier move meant that was going to come to an end.  That first village I stole from, it had enough cattle for me to end it in one night.  I knew I had to act fast or all my work would come to naught.  I had another plan.

I snuck into the village on the night of the no moon again.  I decided that the ghost was going to have to do something big this time.  The village was not raiding this night as chance would have it and they had a full hundred stolen cattle.  It was clear that they were preparing for the sacrifice the next day. Which was perfect for my needs.  There were many guards, but that also played into my plans.  I approached the dark places near the guards and I quickly stabbed and killed a few guards and dragged them into the shadows.  Then I opened the corral and lead five of the beasts out and panicked the rest out of the pens.  In the confusion I lead the five out and through the fields.  The village was awoken by the confusion.  The alarm went up and the people mobilized and herded that cattle.  Soon they discovered the dead Guards and then they would do a head count.  I was an hour away when sounds of pursuit reached my ears.  They just had enough for the sacrifice and they needed the ones I took.  I growled like a plains cat and stabbed each of the cows with my knife causing them to scatter.  The trail I left for the warriors was wide and through the muddiest locations.  I doubled back to grab my true prize, the rest of the herd.  I passed the majority of the warriors hot on my trail, looking for blood.  When I got back to the village I saw that a skeleton of guards was left to protect the herd.

I nocked my bow and I shot the guards that I could see and closed in to cut the rest.  The wounds I inflicted were minor but I just needed them not fighting me and not dead.  I opened the pens again and took torches and burned one or two of the buildings. This caused a stampede and in the confusion I took as many as I could  and headed out across the hard plains.  When dawn came I had managed to keep more than forty together, I was not sure just how many, and the rest were scattered in all directions.  The weather was the worst, but it helped me a lot.  The sky was overcast and the rain that fell was grey and ash filled like when the mountains blew fire into the sky a few years ago.  This was different, the ash was mixed with frog and fish pieces.  The Primordials were up to something again; bad omens all round.

I knew I had enough cattle and I knew how sacrifices were done, I did not know how hard it was to complete 100 sacrifices at the same time.  I started with a prayer to Ahlat and when that part was finished I took the first cow away from the others and slit its throat, offering its life to Ahlat.  After the first few cows, my hands were sticky with blood, after fifteen all my limbs were sticky after twenty I realized that the cows were afraid of me and taking them away was wasting time that I might not have.  The cows lulled and mooed with panic as I waded into their midst, offering short prayers to Ahlat as I slit each cow's throat.  The blood pooled at my feet and my count reached a full 100.  The rest of the cattle were panicked beyond measure when I released them to the savanna.  I later learned that the priests administered some special fodder before a sacrifice to keep the beast docile.  But it was too late for that anyway.  I placed the wood around the cattle and I set it aflame.  The smoke of the sacrifice and the flames towered above the plain.

There was a presence beside me I felt then.  Ahlat, stood by me and he praised me and my accomplishment.  He bowed to me, saying that I had been called to a higher purpose, that I would serve the gods in a mighty struggle.  I was taken aback at his words.  But what was I going to say?  He told me that he was proud of my sacrifice to him and that he would normally take me for his Bride, if I had not been chosen for the Unconquered Sun.  I was flattered, I had never dreamed I could be a Bride of his.  Ahlat was my first love and I told him as much.  I was filled with the glory of his presence and he took me there in the afternoon sun.  As the sun set and my god Ahlat filled me one last time, the Primordials had one last surprise for the day, a memory that I carried through until the end.  The sun hung over the horizon as it set and it turned a deep blood red then it turned black as night.  It was not an eclipse, the rays of the sun were blackened too and the Moon hung in the sky off to the side, the stars and the Wanderers were visible too.  Then as quickly as it happened the sun brightened and returned.

That night I returned to my village, I still had seven extra cattle and they seemed relaxed around me.  As I journeyed back home several other cattle at I had released the night before came to me and joined the the herd.  When a raiding party say the herd as easy pickings they attacked in force hoping to steal them away.  I instinctively leaped into the air, executing a perfect back flip and landed on the cattle behind me.  My balance was sure and I ran from my location across the herd and punched, kicked and lashed out ant any who came close.  The battle took only a brief moment all the attackers were laid out unconscious in the short grass.  I was not even breathing heavy, nor did I break into a sweat.  When I arrived home, the cows went and joined the others and I after a very long nights of activity, retired to my parents hut.  They woke when I returned.  There were many words spoken about responsibilities in this world. If I were not going to join with the warriors, then I was going to have to find a man to breed with.  I was thirteen at this point and I told them, I should prefer to talk in the morning as I was very tired, there was no light kept in the house and I through myself onto my rug and fell asleep.

(*** Side note, the years of measuring are different in Creation, a year there is 425 days long, 13 would be closer to 15 anywhere else***)

The sounds of wailing woke me as dawn spilled through the window, I had forgotten what I had looked like, painted head to toe with the blood of cattle.  My hair was plastered against my head and it had dried there.  It was seared to me by the heat of the fire and the ash and smoke covered me again.  I was a mess, but I did not realize it.  All I knew was that the light of Dawn never felt warmer and more refreshing.  When I calmed my mother and father down, and my three siblings by telling them that none of this blood was mine and that I would clean up as soon as I could.  I was saved by a cll from outside, an elder was calling my father and mother to council.  There was a strange occurrence in the night and the pens were full to the maximum with cattle that had appeared over night.  I did not tell them it was me.  I had other things to do today like bathe.

After I bathed in the river I lay on the grass naked to let the sun dry me.  That is where they found me; I remember that bath and the hour I spent sunning myself very well, as it was the last free moment that I had, the last time when I had no concerns and no great weight upon my legs.  One of the younger children found me, there was great commotion.  A god had come to the Sookmoia tribe for the first time.  It was the god of the plains that my people grazed their cattle, it was the god of the river that the cattle drank from and it was Ahlat.  They had just finished telling everyone about my deeds and the things that I had accomplished on my own.  And they told my people that I was one of many great champions that had bee selected to fight a great enemy.  It was at that moment, my cloak of duty was hung from my shoulders and I left my people, rising up in a great cloud.

Romance Plot Line

Romance subplot for Stalking Jaguar

I allow my characters a lot of personal direction.  One of the ways is to allow them to introduce a subplot that they wish to explore with their character.  They can chose Sorcery, Nemesis, Romance or some other theme.  The idea is that it is in addition to plot of the story, something on the side, some aspect of the game that they want to explore on the side.  This seems to be very minor at first glance, but I request that they invest in the subplot some of their experience.  So they have to save for something other than Character Development and they have to decide the level of the investment.  They can invest 3, 6 or 9 xp in the subplot.  Exact time the Subplot is featured, they get a dividend of 1, 2 or 3 xp and when the subplot concludes, they get the full investment back again.

A level one investment is a minor inconvenience.  There might be a bureaucrat who feels snubbed and is generally unhelpful every time you meet up with them.  At worst they could send you misinformation that results in an inconvenience for the character.  Or a minor love affair on the side.

A level two investment represents equal power levels.  Your enemy is of equal power and is a threat to you alone, but to the rest of your group is a minor threat.  Or to complete this subplot you need to complete some arduous but mundane task. When you are finished you have accomplished something but have no lasting affects.

A level three investment is a major threat.  Your enemy is a threat to you or your party.  It is a quest that reaches across the world and when it is done, your character is changed in some way.  Like a sorcery Quest, where the last stage is a sacrifice that alters the character.  Or a nemesis, who threatens the entire party, forcing the character to change.  A romance plot could evolve into a nemesis plot depending how it ends where the former love interests will not stop until they see their love dead.

So I need to construct a romance subplot.  An epic love story.  And there are themes that need to be told in Romance.  It is not just about sex.  It is about danger.  Rescue.  It is about the draw of non violent conflict, it is about love that crosses social lines and crosses borders and realms.  Epic love stories are not Romeo and Juliet, that is merely a level two romance.  We are talking Orpheus, who crossed into the underworld, wooed Hades and won the chance to take his lover home if he just not look backwards, but having looked backwards lost it all.  It is about forbidden love that if mishandled would destroy a nation, like Sir Lancelot and Guinevere.

Off hand there are several themes that are viable.  There is a love affair between a dynastic Dragon Blooded and Stalking Jaguar a Solar Anathema, a love that is forbidden and if word should get out, would bring down a Dynastic House, so the only solution is that he must kill his love for his Family to prove his loyalty and failing that, his house sends assassins to erase the forbidden love.  Then the lover of Stalking Jaguar throws himself before the wrath of his house and dies protecting his lover.  The rage of grief that the scion of that house should die in the attempt drives the Patriarch of the house mad with grief and vows that Stalking Jaguar shall be destroyed or else the House in ruins.    Meanwhile the lover, dies for his love and his sacrifice is noted, just before he enters Lethe and is contacted by a Deathlord and is offered a second chance . . ..  The new Death Knight is strong and ugly as sin, the effects of decomposition.  Will the love survive this transformation, or will it fail, spiraling into yet another Nemesis!

That is one option.

A second option is that of …  No.  I really like that one I just painted.  It is perfect. It has everything.  I can even picture who this person is.  Grandson of the Empress, the favoured son of Mnemon.  A graduate of worthy of the Mnemon name.  Trained as an immaculate priest, given special dispensation to leave the Immaculate Order to pursue House obligations and a trained in sorcery to boot.  In Thorns after the Death of his long time wife a few years ago.  Meets Stalking Jaguar, who is an odd woman, with white jade artifacts and small stature.  What starts as a small dalliance quickly escalates over distance.  It escalates to the point where he actually falls in love and her anathema nature does not matter.  His mother is happy and summons his new love interest to her for an audience.  To meet her.   There is a dance about why she can't meet her and then there is an investigation. Perhaps she consents to come visit Mnemon.  It becomes obvious that this relationship will not work.  There will be second circle demon assassins.  There will be a Sidereal Bronze Faction assassin.  The Wyld Hunt will be involved.  Mask of Winters may become involved if the lover is still in the city when he arrives.  Lovers in a burning city at its fall—great motif.  A battle Royal where the lover dies protecting Stalking Jaguar and then it gets messy

Super Designer Babies

I was listening the a TED podcast and they were talking about gene editing of children with CRISPR.  Specifically of people.  I recalled the movie Gataca where people on Earth do that.  Which is okay in my mind.  Most people and the speaker in this podcast talked about designer babies that produced stronger and smarter children and stronger and smarter adults, but this is not what it would be used for.

Childhood leukemia.  Diabetes.  Congenital Heart Defects.  Hemophilia.  Cystic Fibrosis.  Muscular Dystrophy.

The end to genetic diseases.  The end to diseases that have a genetic component.

Yes they will try to create children that are smarter, except that more about intelligence is dependent on how stimulated your first three years of life are and less about how good your genes are.  They will try to make people stronger, but that depends more on how active a child is.  Compare the child that is inactive versus the active one.  Research on gut flora is telling us that many things about that affect other things in our life.

The long and the short of it is if we want super children, we need to have stimulating early life environments and physically stimulating environments.  If we want future Nobel winning scientists, future Olympians, we will not find a genetic advantage until every child is on an equal footing.  Let's unpack that.  Is an Olympic medalist, a super human, or did they just have the advantages that allowed them to become that person.  The olympian swimmer swims for thousands of hours a year, eats the best food and has the dedication to do so.  There is some physical component, but it is not as important.  The question is: is the drive a genetic component?  If it is, then that drive would be the important part of any scientist or athlete, not intelligence nor strength.

Genetic super children, designer babies are the ones that will be free of genetic diseases that their parents have, they could be enhanced with tall genes and blue eyes or tan skin, but athletic and intelligence are environmental mostly.

Dreams 3

Before each session I have started giving each character a dream that they have had from their past lives

In a few hours my six players will begin and here are their dreams:

Leaf

Long nights of bathing in the hot springs and sunning yourself dry in your top most adobe in the First City, Rathess, all for the preparation of the services to be held in the oldest temple dedicated to the Unconquered Sun in Creation.  It holds a special place in your heart, this temple still holds to the old ways, human sacrifice.  Abhorrent on so many levels now, except that it is the only of the most heinous of human criminals that are sacrificed, the irredeemable.

They are laid out before you, on the alter at the heights in the centre of the city.  Once the tallest building, now almost every other rises one hundred levels higher, but in this city, the Dragon Kings hold this one highest of all.

The stone knife cuts the breastbone and you reach in and pull the still beating heart from the beast of a man who stalked the streets of Hollow killing children.  This heart like others would rest forever here within the temple until the sun set its last time.  The murderer would reincarnate in to a better life, because you killed him, which seems unfair, as his victims received no such consideration.

The light of the Sun fell upon the Heart as the last of its blood pumped free.  The Dragon Kings and humans before you all heads raised to the glory of Solar Invictus.

The Practitioner

As part of your duties the Deliberative has directed that those sorcerers of the greatest strength and known in quantity, (ie registered) patrol Creation to seek out demons that escape their bindings.  Sometimes they escape their bindings, sometimes the will of the summoner is overwhelmed, sometimes a quirk of reality allows one to slip into Creation.  There have been many such accidents and many laws to prevent the occurrences, but they still happen.  There is a law that prevents architects from getting work if the job may beyond their skill, to prevent Amalion from entering Creation after the architect kills them-self.

Most of the time it is Cultists or Infernalist, but that might cause a panic so it is never put that way.  There is a deep secret that since the Primordial War, many Solars have had a deep desire to fight the fight they were made to fight, long after the fight is over.  Some seek to relive their glory, others seek to challenge themselves in was that they never could as they Exalted years after the war.

The real dangerous ones are the ones that don't feel complete as Solars without the Malfeans in the world and seek their return.  When this becomes known, it is often too late, but when it does occur people like you are called to go to the front line.

Of the last several dozen instances you have been called a handful of times, but the figure before you has been called to them all.  Dressed in Shadows that obscure everything, gender and everything else, they have a hate on for all things Demons and infernalism more than any other.  There are rumours that he or she was the sole survivor of her Circle in the Primordial War.  Rumours.  What can be known without a doubt is they prefer to work alone and that it works directly with the Bureau of Destiny and tracks people meticulously.  It is the scariest Solar you know, the one that no one talks about.  You also know that it requested you be here to provide support, you and an ancient Dawn Caste, you and them against one Infernal Solar.  You know that you need to be prepared because it asked you along, rather than working by itself…

The jungle is hot and the constant drip would be aggravating if it were not for the regular cacophony of the rainforest at night was replaced by near complete silence.  The shadow told you that the Infernalist was a Night Caste and had Adamant Circle Sorcery.  It told you that the there was reports of a Third Circle Demon of Adorjan moving through Creation near the  southern border with the Wyld.  Where there is a one demon there will be others.  Your role was to engage and Banish the Demons, the Dawn was to allow you to do that.  There would be risk, a lot of risk.  The Shadow said that when the demons are engaged the risk would be the highest, and that is when it will kill the Infernal, when it attacks you.

It was like you knew it would be: the Demons first wave was a hoard of First and Second Circle demons of extreme obscurity, that would require multiple castings of Adamant Circle Banishment, as there were too many for the Dawn to hold back.  You knew that it was a good plan, the last would be the actual Third Circle demon, you had to hold back enough power to banish it and defend against the summoner when it attacked until the Shadow delt it a fatal blow.  When it came you realized the error, there were two Third Circle demons; you were out played, perhaps by the Shadow itself… The second from last gone you began the last, the attack was anticipated but there was nothing left for you to do but complete the banishment you had started—the Diaklave pierced your breast through to your abdomen.  Your conviction to live kept you observant to the end.  The Dawn landed on either side of you and last the head of your Circle Mate the Night Caste, who you guessed was the reason you were picked….  The soft steps of the Shadow beside you.  She knelt beside you and whispered, "May I do your next Incarnation a better turn in your next life."

Then nothing

The deep breath in of a beautiful morning after a night of relaxation.  The concubines that served you last night did wonders to help you relax.  The last week you spent roughing it deep in the field searching the wilds of An-Teng for the yozis cult in those jungles.  It would have been worse if you were mortal with the leeches and such.  You had support, a Dawn Caste and a Zenith, two locals that were on vacation.  Normally you would not have requested the help, but your investigation revealed that the main member of the Cult was a Infernal Night Caste, and you knew that it could go wrong, very wrong.  You were not sure who, which is the trouble with Night Caste Infernals.  Always best to have back up.  Everything went fine until the end.  But nothing that you could do about that, you tried your best.  The Dawn was allied with your target.

Normally such a slip up would have meant your demise, but there was a guardian out there who saved your hide.  Its inky shadow appeared on the periphery of your vision at the last moment.  Your first clue of the betrayal was the Zenith and the Dawn's diaklave sticking through his head.  The battle was almost lost when shadow joined you fresh after you and they were nearly dead.

Facing death makes mornings a real delight.  You just wish they were more rare experiences.

Deep in the dark you plunge, your fall arrested just before the bottom.  That Ghost you tortured, dressed like a black Heron.  She told you that she was a dead Solar.  You knew that.  You told her as much.  Torture is never a reliable way to get information.  It is just fun.  The best and most reliable interrogation method is to act like a friend.  To tell them what you know is true and to get them to tell you more, because you know that too.  They know you already knew it so they don't mind telling you.  Then you let them know you did good and you give them a reward.  Soon you have it all.

She apparently gave her soul to one of the dead Primordials.  For power.  Because she had none being dead.  Well you still have power, what will they give you?

Before you is the monster tomb of He who Holds in Thrall, the side broken where the first age Solars broke it when they created the Black Nadir Concordant.  You reached inside and woke the dead thing you held in contempt. It that picked her as a minion was not worthy of you.  You caused it pain as you set your will upon it.

You traveled to the other accessible tombs and probed their depths and heard their names.  You forced them too to heel and commanded them with fear.  You traveled on until you found it at last.  The Neverborn that you and your Circle made so many years ago, and she unmade them in turn.  Here she dwelt in the darkness and nothingness: Void of Desire

You woke.  Your clothing is stuck to you and your clothing wet.  Your voice is raw.  Your companions stand in your adobe, four of them holding you down.

 Nix

The brimstone cut the air as your chanting reached a crescendo.  The essence that you held was greater than anything you had tried before.  You had seconded this ritual many times, but this time it was all you.  Your seconds lent you their strength of essence and it all poured through you.

"Come forth Amalion, I beseech you," you command.  You and your two seconds collapse drained of essence completely.  Licking your lips there is a sharp taste of brass and the grit of sand.  In the complex summoning circle stands a middle aged woman with a lavender veil draped over her face.  Her arms are white with grains of green and seemingly pure marble.

"How will you command me, Mistress," she asks. "This time will you ask for what you really want?"  There is a very faint smile on her lips.  Her equally marbled tongue caresses her upper lip.

You regain your composure, you know you need to act fast, Calibration will only last another few hours and their prohibitions on casting this spell are known and dire.  You spread the designs out before her and direct her to create your grand palace with a Manse heart, wood Manse that would create the Gem of immortality.

She looks at the plans.  "Is this all?"

"It is all for now!  Make it beautiful and make quickly, you must be gone by dawn."

The ground shudders and the world shakes as stone, wood and Jade erupt from the earth.  The grounds settle and plants rise, trees are transplanted, gardens arise.  Your dream Manse and palace comes together like none other.

The sun is just peaking over the trees as you find yourself in your magnificent bed chambers.  The bed clothes are perfect and turned down invitingly.  "At your service Mistress, what is your pleasure this morning."  She appears the same, less a veil.  Her eyes hold your heart and her lips will soon hold something else…

The dream lifts far too early and you wake.  Frantically, there was just one last image of that dream, beyond the figure of Amalion, a dark Shadow with human form…

Akri

The stain upon the land could only mean one thing someone had completed the rituals and had summoned Octavian.  In all likelihood, the summoner would be one of the piles goo in one of those oil spots.

There had been some talk in the deliberative about why this demon was so popular among cultists.  The debate was a nice diversion from the humdrum of regular affairs; this time a debate about the amount of time that the Wyld Frontier Station should spend researching floppy ears or something.  Your point was there were so many demons out there that were more challenging than Octavian, that were easier to summon.  The beast with a hundred arms, the cube of stone thingy you remembered from somewhere were all much more of a challenge.  The debate went on for an hour and the Twilight who wanted to research on that Wyld place got fed up and stormed out.

Octavian turned toward you, and you could tell that he recognized you—his shoulders slumped.  Bored this time, you unclasped your diaklave and unleashed your Octavian Banishing Prana on him as your circle jokingly called it.

As you cleaned off your blade, the ichor could not stain it, but it always pays to be careful, a bird fluttered down to you.  It was a intricate paper bird.  You unfolded it.  There was a message.  It read: Because he is so easy to kill and he seems to the Cultists to be so powerful.  All the Cultists gather to perform the ritual, usually in a locked confined space.  Octavian kills them all, always; he is so tired of being summoned.  That is why I let it be known that he is such an achievement to be sought after among the occultists.  (Symbol)

The symbol was all the signature you could find.  After you read the note it burst aflame.

Hinterlands of Thorns

The thing about Creation is that the dominant species will just fill up the space where they don't exist and then it will be filled and the animals and monsters and stuff be damned, unless the monsters are way tougher or there are more than just monsters.  Where the weather is pleasant, humans rule.  Where the weather is not not always.

The region East of Thorns is better than most all the time, it is not as good as the Realm and the River Provinces, but it has no bad weather unless you don't like summer heat.  The terrain and climate are very similar to Earth Anology Africa savanna.

The nations to the Grey River have been invaded by the Realm.  Over the last 150 to forty years ago.  It has been a long campaign where the goal was resource extraction, manse building and recovery of ancient artifacts where they existed. Each nation has an entry about what they were like before and what happened since and what the Realm is doing to it.

There are maps.  Each hex is about 50km across and each hex contains about 3000 square km.  Most of these nations is about the size of switzerland or greater to give you an idea how large they are.  The largest are close to the size of Germany or California.

The savanna grass lands north of the jungles is mowed short by large roaming herds of herbivores: zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, antelope, buffalo and many others.  Predators, great cats, wolves, hyenas, bears and humans keep these numbers down.  Other animal like elephants and giraffe are abound and many of all these critters have been domesticated by Man.

DARIM
plains town with acacia forest to the south.  Nomadic tribes that hunt gazelles and buffalo.  The savanna contains a great number of normal creatures.  The lands around are civilized and Wyld zones never got a solid footing and certainly never stayed.  The great herds move over the boundaries and through the tribes.  In addition to the Bison there are wildebeests and zebra, the last of which many have been domesticated for riding. The locals are protective of these creatures and never sell them to outsiders, but they have been known to offer them as gifts.  Ahlat is worshipped here as they are I close proximity to Harborhead.  In the Acacia trees elephants and giraffes are abundant.  The savanna here is very large it stretches from the large Shadowland in the west to just shy of the coast.  It heads north to the hills near Thorns east to the Giranza River.

What has changed since the occupation is a lot.  First the demesne in the area have been capped except where Jade deposits have been found.  There area a few of these locations.  Mostly the Jade is red or green, but some white jade has been uncovered.  There is a deposit of Orichalcum here as well.  There is a strong Solar Dragon line running through here that goes to Thorns.  There are also a strong Lunar lines through the region too.  There is a strong line of wood and air hear too.  Which means there are a few very powerful Demesne here at least three natural ones and a few that could be made through Geomancy, but the Realm does not do that, because they can't build appropriate Manses for them, so they stop at level threes.  The region is dotted with manses now, about  600 of them, 300 level 1 manses, 180 level two and 120 level three, of which about 30 are capping demesne that are more powerful.  The mines of the region are bringing out about ten talents of pure jade each year.  Not to mention deposits of other materials like iron, silver, copper and gold.  There are a few cities in this region that predate this age in ruins.  One sits in the middle of the plains sitting pretty nothing to give a clue that there was anything there, except the level five demesne.  The other level five demesne also have first age or shogunate towns, destroyed by contagion or in the Balorian Crusade.

The people have also been changed.  They were a convenient resource that helped the Dragon Blooded construct the six hundred manses, and mine the resources.  Additionally the people needed food to be grown and animals to be slaughtered.  People were needed to entertain the people.  Fortresses had to be built also.  And the camps to house the people too.  The people are not really free here, but it is not as bad as the slave states.  There are latifundia in the working mines, and the latifundia that grew up around the Level three manses have become towns the people's way of life changed in a few generations.  The wildebeests and the herds still roam, but the herds are smaller and the grass is longer than it was.  There are still native people living the way they were, but they are reduced too, in number and quality.  The Zebra god is still worshiped but only on the appropriate holy days.  The Immaculate Order has claimed the region and pacified its gods.  The civilized people's are more numerous than before, but as stated no longer the same people.

LIMGAR
plains town at the confluence of the Darim river and the Giranza River.  They domesticated gazelles and buffaloes. They worshiped a Crocodile God. The nation is about 18k square km, not very big but culturally similar to Darim, but town based.  They use agriculture and domesticated herds of the same herd animal.  No zebras though.  They were known for their Giraffe Cavalry with three riders, two with lances and one with a bow.  The rivers over flow their banks in the rainy season, but more so on the Giranza river.  Before the end of the dry season the trenches that line the fields near the river are dug out and the dirt is added to the edges of the river.  When the river floods in the wet season the embankment is flooded and the fields submerged.  The flood waters subside but the dykes hold the water in the fields.  They are able to get two crops from the fields each year and the fields are highly productive with rice and wheat.  The stalks of the crops are used as silage for the herd animal to supplement their feed, allowing denser numbers.  The people used to trade food to the People of Darim for hides and used the hides to fashion finished goods.  Limgar was a destination for the Guild and the Darim used to come there at that time too.

When the Realm arrived they caused less changes to their way of life than the caused to the Darim, however there were significant changes.  The Giraffe Cavalry was destroyed and abolished, and cut up for food.  The herds were reduced and the people were enslaved to work on various projects like mines and manse erection.  There were less manses here because of the smaller area, but the set up as a more civilized nation meant that many of the practices were continued.  The planned road was altered so that it came close to the region.  The excess silage was used to resupply caravans that moved down the road.  The herds were therefore thinned significantly.  The skilled crafts people were exported as slaves to the Realm and to Darim where they had less skilled workers.  Latifundia were set up too, but as a reorganization of where the people farmed, mined and such.

There is one fortress here. Located in the town of Limgar itself.  The guild still comes here, the road makes more easy travel, but the trade is more restrictive, however, the items the guild brings are often items that the Realm is not as concerned about and this trade keeps the area viable.  There is a jade mine in the area and a latifundia that works it.  There are other concerns, logging of the Acacia wood and other mines.

FALDUR
at the confluence of the Giranza and Pinto rivers.  A town of break away Marukan horse lords who set up a town near Thorns.  The town was destroyed utterly and the hinterland was stripped of its people and horses for the war.  It is a barren land free of people and the horse herds are small.  This is a land that shows how the land might look without human habitation.  There are small bands of people and a few Marukan Horse lords, but this is not thier traditional area.  The herds of bison, gazelles, antelope and a very large hopping rabbit.  There are no tall grasses, they are grazed right down to stubble.  The rains are more constant, so the grass is green year round.  In time this area would have recovered on its own and the horse would come back and men would move in from Darim or Marukan, but in the wake of the war the Realm quietly moved in.  They have moved latifundia from Darim to locations to set up Manses and mine jade and other resources.  The expansion is recent and a quiet invasion, due to the lack or people. Any polite inquiries are met with answers that this is an expansion from Darim only.  The Realm presence is understated.

The latifundia are located mostly in the south, but there area others.  The area is large, nearly as large as Darim, and so the idea that there might be as much as 500 untapped demesne in the area is one of the prime reasons for expansion here. The Empress wisely kept expansion this direction discrete to keep everything quiet, but now at she is gone, the greed of expansion will be unabated.  There are more first age settlements here than Darim as it is closer to the old River Provinces.  Indeed, there is one intact level five Manse here, but the owners are not to be found.  Plans exist on how to augment this manse to change its aspect, but these plans are cautious given the danger of doing so.

Additionally, deposits of jade have been found and these are being exploited first.  Given the nature of how the Empress gifted the Satrapies to Houses, house Cynis is anxious to establish a beachhead here and to strip the area of

KAJALE
At the confluence of the Kajale and Giranza rivers.  A group of Ahlat worshiping, cattle rustling warriors who are subject to raids from Harborhead and vice versa.  They are vegetarians and raid for cattle only for to sacrifice the sacred cows to Ahlat.  The small jungle contains rare woods and many fruit trees.  As vegetarians, they are agrarian, herding cattle for milk only.  They have a difficult boarder with Giranza, their warlike nature and their Warsteeds. The Giranza river is fast flowing and the soil eroded a long it's banks creating steep sides.  The towns over looking the river graze goats and they warn impending attacks.

When the Realm came through here they did not change much socially.  They used their flocks as meat, they cut down the rare woods, as the Satrapy was about to end, and they used the people to build manses in the area.  The forest had a level 4 Demesne in its center, further there is a small cluster if lesser powered demesne here.  In the first age this place was the site of a level 5 Wood Manse and when the usurpation occurred there was damage done to the Geomancy of the area.  With the rare woods gone, the next Great house here capped that remaining demesne.  The first age city that was here was uncovered too.  This changed the direction of the acquisition and the focus of the exploitation of the region.   Today there are a few manses here and the forest has been removed entirely, but the fields are amongst the most productive anywhere in Creation.

OUNOM
located on the plains by the river of the same name. Above the falls they live a top a great escarpment.  They have expanded into Faldur lands before the Realm pushed north during the war.  They are a peaceful nation who herd the savanna animals.  Above the escarpment the two rivers are quite peaceful and broad, the Ounom and Puyo rivers.  They are easily fordable the neighbours are very hostile to the North, but the escarpment keeps them very far away.  To the south Ginga often raids them, but only for cattle and only at night.  The savanna is very open and it is difficult to sneak up in people here.  Wild cattle and others are plentiful and easy to capture.  They often trade with the Ginga, but captured cattle are more important culturally for the Ginga.

When the Realm came the area was added quickly to the conquest and the uniqueness was lost.  The escarpment was decreed a perfect boarder from the river provinces, had to scale and the natives at the base were particularly nasty.

GINGA
nomadic people with no towns.  They rove between the Puyo and Ounom rivers all the way to the hills and the Giranza river.  They raided north into Ounom and Faldur, but would never cross the sacred hills.  They worshiped the god of the Fiery mountain.  Their Fiery patron demands captured trophies for sacrifice each year from able members of the group.  Bought sacrifices mean nothing.  The sacrifices are taken through the hills and thrown alive into a valley filled with boiling lava.  Successful hunters receive blessings and e nation as a whole is protected.  Was protected.

The Immaculate Order had a difficult time subduing this god, but subdue they did.  The Savanna was not fit for much agriculture other than herding.  The expansive size of the area had other uses, mines, manses and the road bisects the region now.  The heathens were placed in latifundia after they were captured bringing sacrifices to their God.  The trap was extremely effective, it took only one year to enslave the entire population.  The hills are actually part of the Giranza nation.

BUÔN
small well fortified town, controls the south bank of the Ounom river from Ginga raiders, does not enter the Sacred hills as it provokes the Ginga.  The northern border is The small semitropical forest.  Beyond the town there is little else.  There are villages but they are fairly large so that the cattle can be brought together inside the palisade.  The herds are smaller than people would like and they practice more agriculture than they would like.  The woods to the north provide good strong building wood for the nation and a good defense from the warlike Ulihm

Taken at the same time as the Ginga, this area was created as a boarder area from the River Provinces.  The woods were taken as a whole.  The wood therein was cut and used in the initial bridges that the road took as it cut across the land.  The timbers were especially straight, long, strong and resistant to weathering.  Over half of the forest is now gone.  Its people suffer a similar fate to that of the other nations mentioned.  The land is also used for other purposes.

GIRANZA
controls the space between its namesake river, the Kigorojo river and half of the Sacred Hills.  Including the Fiery Mountain.  They have successively beat off the Ginga several times and they won't go there for that reason.  They herd gazelles as goats but no cattle, as they border Kajale and Harborhead, and this fact makes them unappealing targets, that and the fact that their Gazelles are the size of horses and they ride them quite effectively.  They were the dominant force in the region before the Realm came.  Their Capitol is located far from the rivers and its boarders.  Considering that, it was still quite advanced with stone walls that they did not build, it was a redoubt built in the Shogunate period.

They worshiped the god of Fiery Mountain and they worshipped Ahlat too.  The high price of sacrifices meant this nation is almost always on the warpath.  When the Realm came they became wise to the tactics used against the Ginga, and they retreated in the face of the Realm to their Capitol.  There they engaged in attacks that defeated the first two forces set against them, but not the third.  The people were enslaved to work the mines and build manses.  There were no major ruins, but the two large volcanoes sit on a major fire Dragon Line and both represent powerful Demesne.  The Red Jade that comes from Giranza is particularly valuable as it often contains streaks of Green Jade and Orichalcum, the impurities actually grant special properties to the jade.  There is one first age ruin.  It is a single structure in the southern Volcano, a smelter of Orichalcum— which is intact and undiscovered, the lava here has a large amount of gold.

KIGOROJO
At the confluence of their namesake river and the Banradley river all the way to Harborhead.  This area is not nomadic and nominally related to Banradley, Sernba, and Haraba.  The four nations were once one but recently, about two hundred years ago split peacefully between four daughters of the Queen

The more modern four nations were related by intermarriage and cultural customs.  They also supported each others military to allow them all to live in relative security in the area.  The people here are visibly different.  They are tall and very dark, but their hue is more purple than brown or black.  The average height of these people is 2 meters tall.  They are known for their running abilities and endurance.  Also they are known for their spears that they use with spear throwers that often go as far as arrows.    The old empire lasted for nearly four hundred years and they were a moderating influence in the area.  The larger nation build many strong defenses and forts which are still in use today.  The split if the empire was a myth, it had been splitting for a century before that, but the idea of the myth is strong in their culture

Kigorojorn are typically shorter than average, and they are more brown, but their eyes are uniformly bright blue.  The old fortresses along the Banradley River and through the hills near the volcano kept the Giranza at bay for centuries.  When the realm came here to invade a eighty years ago, they found this a tough area to crack.  The people saw what was happening, provocateurs entering nations and building manses and later invasion.  The alliance turned the Realm agents away and only let the Guild trade at the boarders.

After the long invasion of three years the lands were divided just like they were in the other lands.

BANRADLEY
Located between the Kigorojo, Banradley and Haraba rivers and the rainforests to the south including the third Volcano, the second largest and most active.  This land is the largest of the three savanna lands.  The ash plumes often cause the rains in the south to be grey or black.  The fields in the south are also the most productive and produce three harvests every year.  Crops are switched every time, only to reduce disease spread.  The wealth of food means that this nation has ample time to devote to the arts.  They are known through the region for stone work and metal work.

When the invasion came the people here were on the forward front protecting the area.  They are less brown and more blue, with the same piercing eyes.  The invasion was successful and the skills of this nation were exploited to make many manses in the south.  The demesne in the south are mixtures of fire and wood as the volcano is at the intersection of a major Fire and Wood dragon line.  The latifundia structure does not really work in this location as the land is too valuable to have open spaces.  A few of the demesne were considered to valuable to be capped off as they increase the productivity of the area.  It is also the most populous nation in the area and the four nations are very populous.

SERNBA
The old Capitol is here.  This is where the nation began, back before Harborhead was really big in the area.  It fills the region south of the other nations down to the Harborhead boarder.  It is large and populous.  The primary food sources are from the trees, fruit and animals.  The long roads are cleared constantly and the nation has forest Elephant labour and hippopotamus cavalry, the Realm paid a heavy price  when they took this nation.  The people here are taller than the rest, over seven feet and dark purple with violet eyes.  The rain of ash from the north makes this area just as productive as Banradley.

The rare woods, medicinal plants, fruit all make this place prime conquest material.  The ancient cities are all occupied, but the hinterlands remain free even after eighty years of occupation, there are too many hiding places and too many dense regions.  The area is rife with hidden first age towns and cities.  There are Dragonking cities that remain untouched.  Last year a patrol went off a well traveled road and discovered a new ruin, and a major base of resistance, a few dozen meters away.

HARABA
The smallest of the Nations.  On the edge of the Haraba River to the jungles to the south and east. This nation was the furthest and the key to the victory for the Realm.  The people are light blue in complexion with dark brown eyes.  This populous region was filled with farmers and traditionally at its height went to the Grey River.

The Realm made a temporary alliance with Badé and while the troops were fighting in the West, Haraba lost much territory, causing the retreat of their forces from the field.  Which precipitated into a total defeat at the boarders.  The Realm treated their allies like kings until they expanded again as they could not hold the terrain with their numbers and used to forest type combat.  Badé lost most of their army in these fields.  Mostly the land is used as grazing land and herds of raving cattle live here.  The south by the Haraba River receives the same ash rain and is just as productive.  The mud from that river has medicinal properties and is very fertile too.

NASOU
Between the Banradley and Nasou rivers rests a warlike nation who battles in vain against the Ulihm.  The people here battle as a matter of course with their blood enemies.  Their focus was very single minded and they were nearly oblivious to the Expansion in the South by the Realm.  They allied themselves with the Realm hoping to beable to use them to take care of their foe.  The Realm was not concerned by the Barbarians and made the deal but used it to take them over.

DIFUT
Controlling the hills to Buôn north to Nasou, and south to the four sisters and Giranza, this nation of thin and tall people survives by having superior bow making skills and by ritually eating a crop of root vegetables found in the hills that creates their odd form and odor. The odor drives the Giranza away from them and makes their steeds bolt.

The Realm did not use Gazelles to invade here, the root diet did not help them and the realm took this area over.

LUNTAUKE
Rich fertile lands between Haraba and the river provide ample food for this people.  Originally they were forest dwellers but they adapted to the sedentary life exceptionally well.  They still have a rite of passage custom of entering the jungle and returning with an animal to prove their strength.  The warrior instincts have allowed them to hold the land between the Jungles and the Grey River unchecked for decades, before the Realm came sixty years ago.

This nation was the historic expansion region of the old empire of the region.  It did not share the look of the people, but it remained fairly peaceful and had a lot of public works.  The people here strong sense of kinship with the four other kingdoms and while not allies they deal with each other peacefully and trade regularly.  The Capitol was a large hub city for the Guild years ago it was reestablished there after the invasion in Port Harlot.

Being a nation on the Grey River, the area was handled differently than the other locations.  There are a latifundia deep in the nation but the Capitol moved to Port Harlot has the appearance of free trade.  The docks here are extensive.  And there is a lot of foreigners here and the Realm presence is reduced outside the city and the road until travel deeper into the hinterland is done.

BADÉ
a jungle city, the wealth of the jungle to the Grey River, keeps this nation well fed, the jungle keeps them from bothering any one else and that was the state of things until their ruler was seduced by the Realm and they expanded into Haraba.  They were severely over reached and the toll on their small army was miserable.  The conquest of this region was quickly done, but in the manner that it had been done so often before: with merchants, prospectors, manse builders and archeologists.  When the infrastructure was all improved the people woke up one day and found they were in a Realm Satrapy and them later a Realm State.

EMRUDOS
another jungle kingdom like Badé, except they do a lot of trade with the Guild, and they remain free from the Realm, for how long, is anyone's guess.  It is a free city.  The banks of the forest on the river are as thick as they are in the south near Jades.  The docks are ancient in origin and that is the only reason why they penetrate the banks.  The dock is also fortified with shogunate defenses.  The forest is deep and impenetrable.  There are walls in the forest that are twenty meters tall and the jungle is at its thickest there on both sides.  The jungle produces enough food for the populous that they can survive a protracted siege.

The walls and dock actually predates the Shogunate.  There is an ancient spell that causes the trees to grow so thick against the walls and should a tree be felled another would grow to replace it before fell.  The location is secure, but the population is small the trade in rare woods and medicines keeps this place supplied.

METENIS
a regular stopping point for guild ships to resupply, before the Realm arrived.  It was a free city in Luntauke and when the nation fell, it fell too the siege here was tough and long fought, although it did recover a bit in the years following, the walls were razed and the setting up of Port Harlot was made more attractive by the long road to the interior.

ULIHM
Wyld barbarians who blend in with the tall grass and run as fast as the cheetah, smart people leave them alone, but no one ever said the Realm was Smart.  The only defeat was here afterwards they burned the grasses down to teach the people a lesson and then avoided them afterwards, but it should be noted that there are manses dotting the landscape here, part of their pact with the barbarians.

VARSI
warrior state similar to Lookshy allied with the same, recently conquered Lugwaal.  They are refortifying their position against the Realm.  They are members of the Federation of Rivers.

LUGWAAL
just conquered by Varsi

THRAZA
A free city from the Realm, they wonder for how long.  The advance of the Realm stopped at Grita and Arcton, perhaps they are safe.

GRITA
A state from the Grita river to the Thraza river and the Acomb forest.  This state marked the furthest most extent of the Federation of Rivers and since it was a not an active member and did not concern itself with the War with Thorns, their pleas for assistance fell on deaf ears.  Some in the River Provinces thought that it was just what they deserved.  Lookshy, on the other hand saw this as an area of deep concern, but nothing could be done as they were fighting Thorns.

The region is further to the north and the region was not just one nation, but a series of smaller town states that were bound together.  The Realm used this structure to invade using one as a proxy.  The entire region is held now and fortified.  Perhaps one day they might turn the area into a few hundred latifundia, but for now it is just a holding.  The demesne of the area have been capped quickly through the use of slaves and demons and much planning.  The resources of the area are also being exploited to the fullest and much of a legion is sitting on this side of the Grey River.  The area was well known by Scavenger Lords, so there was no ruin that was not exploited.

GIKOVO
North of Joraba, they were lost fifty years ago, just before Joraba.

This area was the Beach head of the invasion of the East bank of the Grey river, just opposite of Port Harlot.  There is no bridge over the Grey river here, but the are plans for one.  This area was taken in their traditional manner of sending the civilians first to build and exploit.  Never part of the Federation of Rivers, the invasion here was the first clue for the river Provinces of a Realm presence close by, for the common people.  The Guild had been telling people for years, but it had always been far away, near Thorns.  Now it was in their minds.

The populous was not enslaved.  The region of the East Grey River has a status as Satrapy of the Realm, but it is not the same as the Satrapies of Harborhead, this is in name only.

The conquest of theses regions flowed through the land sequentially.  In the end much of the area was divided into Perpetual Satrapies, that is the house that conquered the lands controlled the lands and raised the taxes for the Realm forever.  The Manses built are owned by the houses that built them, the mines by the House that invaded them.  It a house controlled the Manse, they had the land forever.  Just before the end of their tenure many houses stripped the resources from areas that they could not hold, extracting the last bit of resources that they could.  It also meant that Houses were less likely to engage in a costly military campaign if they could not hold the land. Part of the reason why Kigorojo took so long to be conquered.  When it did fall though, it was the richest satrapy of all if not in Manses.  There are four traditional Satrapies though in the area because of their high profile nature.  There are as follows: Grita, Gikovo, Joroba and Luntauke.  The rest have permanent controllers.

BEXL
Independent town on an island in a lake safe only because they are very small.  Small lake, smaller island.  The people eat a lot of fish and they also harvest rice from the shallows of island.  There is not Even a hill on this low island.  Winter snow melt often raises the lake and floods large sections of the land.  The ice from the lake will often jam up the river exit too, but not for long.  The ice is never thick enough to easily cross, so the people feel safe from invasion in the winter.

ACOMB
located between a river and the forest namesake, these people waged a long and bitter war against Lugwaal, only to see them collapse to Varsi.  The Realm plunders the wood borders and they have switched to battling the Realm, but only to make the Realm feel like it is difficult to plunder the woods.  They are worried that either Varsi or the Realm will just swoop in and grab them up.

STAWFORD
across the river from the Lookshy post in the area they feel safe as an Independant town in the middle of a ford.  They control the river which forces trade across their bridges.  They have a pact with the river god Staw,

IERCARI
a strong force south of the Grey river.  They trade heavily with the Guild wood and minerals

ARCTON
The last conquest, the town and nation provides a large buffer between the republic of Chaya far the the East.  Taken in the later days of the War with Thorns, this nation fearing what happened in the south would happen to them they did not send troops to fight against Thorns.  Although they had a lot of cavalry, the conquest was a small footnote to the larger campaign.  This nation was mostly open space and will provide jade and manses in the years to come, with much investment.  The engineers have only begun to arrive in the past few years and the prospecting and construction has started, including roads to the river and to Jorba in the south.

PORT HARLOT
Terminus of the great Jade road that comes all the way to Thorns.  Although the town was completed only a few decades ago, it has grown considerably.  Most of the flow of goods goes up the road to Thorns.  Mostly because they wish to keep the eyes off the amount of goods they are taking.  It is a real port though, there are goods arriving here from the conquests that are not on the western side of the Grey River.  Their are heavier goods like Jade and minerals that are easier to transport by water and there are people that would rather experience a trip in relative luxury on a boat than on the road.  Some goods do not have a good market in the Realm and can be sold for better prices in Nexus too, so some goods go that way.  The Guild also brings caravans this way as the road provides better service, thus Port Harlot is a bigger and better Guild Hub city than the previous one.  Even here, the Grey river is too wide to be easily spanned, so there is a strong force of Guild, Realm and private ferry services based here.

There is a dragon of troops positioned here at this anchor of the road.  The harbor includes a separate docks for the Wood Fleet of the Realm.  They patrol the Grey River from Nexus to Jades. There are ten ships stationed permanently, including four triremes and six galleys, but has space to fit twice this number at any one time.  The merchant marina rarely has less than three times as many ships as the military ones.

BY-BLOW
About half way between Port Harlot, Thorns and Bent Creek and at the cross roads between all these cities, it is sort of important as it provides another access to the sea from these areas.  It is also important because it allows the flow of goods from Harborhead's hinterland if the state should rebel.  Since it is deep into the lands, it is being used by the Guild as a minor Hub town.  The guild resupplies the location and many small routes are run thought the region from here.  The entire region is more productive now, producing food and minerals where before it only produced hides and mounts.  There is still a market with those things but now there are more finished goods as well as resources.

The town is walled and has begun to attract a large number of settlers who have parked themselves under the walls.  Many of these people are artisans who are out of work from the projects around the region.  They are skilled as stone masons, Geomancy and other important skills.
