#hardcorehenry

Last Wednesday I got a chance to go see a preview of a movie, Hardcore Henry.  It is the first of a number of First Person movies that I am sure that will be made following the coat tails of this movie.  As the trailer begins, you find yourself in a tank filled with water or some medical solution, it drains, and you find yourself with a pretty young woman who calls you your wife.  You seem to have suffered grievous injuries and two of your limbs are missing and bionic replacements have been added.  Five minutes after that while technicians are trying to load up your voice there is an attack and you are forced to flee for your life and your wife has been kidnapped.

The start is like many SciFi video games, lots of information and a plot and then like that you go through the motions of learning the game controls, and the movie is slow then it ramps up and violence insues.  It is jarring, as you are thrown to the side as you duck under cars as they try to hunt you down.

Through the story, you meet allies and pick of several weapons and use them, everything from guns to knives to grenades to missiles.  You kill a lot of people with your bare hands too, because you have super bionic strength.  There is a lot of humour too because otherwise this would have been a grim, very grim movie.  There are many inside jokes for people who play first person shooters, which I am not one of those, but I still understood.  There are plot twists that will throw you for a loop unless you are paying very close attention.

The end was not a surprise but still everyone cheered when it occured.  That is why this movie succeeded, the hero was not James Bond, or Rambo; the hero was you.  No voice was okay because you were watching e movie so you weren't talking either, people were talking to you.  Yes it was excessively violent, but all first person shooters are, it was more graphic, and it was busier than all computer games, but it was that style.
