Deepwater Siaka

Your life has not worked out as you planned.  The days of your youth playing by the sea are a long way off.  The chores that the women of your village gave you as appropriate tasks for girls learning to be women, bothersome then, now you see them as the good old days.  The time before your eldest brother went off to sea was the golden age of your youth.  Your dreams of heading out on your own vessel was the dream that you made happen.  You became Tia, and left your family.

You rose through the ranks, becoming an able bodied sailor after only a year and a few years later you were an important member of the company.  Those were golden years too.  The sudden loss of your younger brother when his ship disappeared near the Skull Stone Archipelago, was the end of those times.  You took your ship out on your own to see if you could find survivors on your own without the company's approval.  The waters were deep, but that time of year the storms were weak, so the disappearance probably meant pirates.  You had experienced your share of sea battles and you knew the risks of the seas, but this was the boy who practically raised.  Nothing would stop you from finding out what had happened to him.

You searched the region of where your Brother's ship was supposed to go.  A month had past and the crew was beginning to tire of the search.  Your breakthrough occured when a you were being hounded by a fast ship out of Skullstone.  Apparently your ship had strayed too close to a region that the Silver Prince thought important and a fast galley was sent to persue you.  The rowers rowed day and night without tiring and they soon caught up to your ship and began to board you ship.  It was then battling one of the zombie rowers that you recognized your brother.  The terrible sorrow was replaced instantly with indignant anger.  Power came to your tired limbs and sufficed you with energy of the Unconquered Sun.  A booming voice bade you to destroy the dead that walk Creation, for they are not in his favour.  A desperate losing fight turned as a skiff in a changing wind and victory was snatched out of thier grasp, the destroyed undead burned away into ashes before your wrath.

As a Captain and Solar Exalt of the Zenith caste, a priest, you lead your crew in many trips that earned them much money and lead them in many victorious battles, but soon you became known to the Realm and then sent out fleets to hunt you down and kill you.  It was in this time that you met The Nameless Wolf, who appeared before you using sorcery.  He told you the the danger to your crew would pass as soon as you left them and came with him.  He took you from your ship and you traveled the northern wastes to a small settlement called Somewhere Else.  There you met a great Solar artificer named Orixia, and you made a foray into the underworld near that town and discovered a great city once called Braham's Bridge that was a relic of the a bygone era.  You thought that this hamlet would begging to be a place where you could rest and get used to your powers and turn the shadowlands nearby into a place of fertility.  But when you came again to the village, the Nameless Wolf was there again and he said that he and the Cult of the Illuminated had need of you.  You were going to do great things.

The Cult of the Illuminated had many enemies in Creation and they were all waiting for the Cult to show itself and when they did they would reach out and cut its head off.  The biggest enemy was the Bronze Faction and their Puppets, the Realm, a nation of one hundred million souls and nearly a million Dragon Blooded.  They had learned that the Realm was mobilizing about fifty thousand troops, lead by ten thousand Dragon Blooded and they had only a couple of seasons to train up soldiers to fight them.  As desperate a situation as that picture seemed, they told you that the Cult had several advantages: they did not know where we were, Solars are the greatest leaders of the First age, and the Solars were the best at training new soldiers.  They explained that  they could take simple slaves and train them to be the best soldiers in creation in under a season, we had two seasons.

The first stage they said was to train you and regular soldiers too.  They said that they would prefer to do this slowly and to let us become powerful naturally, but that our time was up.  So they trained you.  They taught you how to lead.  They taught you how to fight.  They taught you how to train other soldiers.  They taught you other things as well.  They honed your mind.  You had two Solar trainers that you saw every week.  Every day was filled with eight hours of training with weapons and drills, and eight hours of learning in informal classes.  After a month of training you were leading a smaller set of just freed slaves in the things that you had just learned in addition to your own training.

The winter snows came to the Town of Nowhere.  There was a great tower that served as a temple to Solar Invictus and there was a ramshackle of huts and hovels outside with pathways.  When the snows had melted there were streets and barracks.  The town had grown from a thousand just freed slaves to an armed encampment of ten thousand who spent their time taming the lands around, clearing the land and preparing the lands for crops.  In the Spring season the soldiers spent time farming and training.  There were raids on the Latifundia in the Slave States constantly bringing in new recruits, but there was no true battles fought.

This changed when the General Ayed fought the first Tepet Legions that had landed just outside Someplace Else.  The battle was a sound defeat for the Tepet legions, but it was only a forward force of a thousand troops, not the true brunt of the forces that would soon be on the ground.  The General came to Nowhere to be debriefed by The Nameless Wolf and the other generals, of which you were present.  You heard that a force less than half the size of the Realm forces sent them running and fleeing to the Realm.  He then let it been known that if he had wanted to, he could have cut off their retreat, but for the plans of the Nameless.  The Nameless spoke that they were finally ready and they needed the Realm to throw everything at them and for that it was necessary to let them know that the Solar Exalted were here.  Ayed said that only two Solars were revealed in the fight.  Nameless thought that the overwhelming victory would bring a overwhelming response for two Solars that seemed to get lucky, but since they had 15 solar Generals and the troops were well prepared, it would be them that would be surprised.

You were given a thousand troops spaced out in four forts in the frontier.  You were told that you would need to use the troops sparingly, to quickly travel between the tired and the fresh troops to attack the enemy soldiers.  The tactic worked spectacularly well.  Each fort consisted of two Battle Lions, about 120 troops.  Each battle lion was composed of four Lions of thirty troops and each Lion had five Claws of six troops.  You tried to limit the smaller engagements and the majority of your battles involved Lions battling up to four times the numbers of troops.  You began to prefer the engagements where your enemy was lolled into a false sense of confidence.  There was one time that you purposely let yourself be surrounded by four units of equal size.  Standard operating procedure with standard troops would mean that you would be forced into a defensive stance and you would be dead.  Instead you attacked.  They never knew what hit them.  Your leadership and battle acumen meant that you lost not a single soldier and all the attacking units were scattered, dead or captured.  The battles were too easy and the strategists began to see that you were courting greater and greater odds, that the strain of he constant warfare, and the killing was having a toll on your attitude.

In three months of battles you had a string of victories to your name.  Switching between your forces, you fought on average one and a half full battles a day, ninety-four victories in fifty-nine day, your troops had swepte the Slave coast from South of Nowhere to just outside of Serrat.  You had accounted for nearly ten thousand dead, captured and routed.  In your last encounter you ran into your first real opposition.  There was two full dragons of Realm troops lead by the Leader of the Tepet Legions, Tepet Arada.  Although your soldiers had marched through the night and half of them had been in battle the previous day, you set up to fight these new fresh Realm soldiers.  You defied the normally proscribed best times to attack forces and you decided that it was best that your troops got to rest through the day and to attack them in the night.  They were not the soldiers that you had fought before, these were elite professional soldiers from House Tepet.  Their Fanglords were dragon blooded, so you knew that more than a fifth of the 1500 were dragon blooded, and you only had two Battle Lions, 480 elite battle hardened mortal troops.  Your orders were to wait for reinforcements, but you were confident.

You split your troops into two groups, you would lead the first into them from the North while they slept and then after waking them up, you would get the first battle lion to retreat while you joined the Second to attack them from the South.  News of your unconventional tactics had preceded you to them from the fleeing soldiers over the past two months and you had been working your way towards this position for over a month, so you were not surprised that they were not all asleep when your first attack hit them.  They were had Warstriders ready in the camp and you decided to break up the attack early, ordering your forces to split into claws and reform a mile north and begin heading back to the battle; you took leave to join the second force.

The second force was ready in positions and you quickly sent them north and engaged the riled up enemy at around midnight.  A third of the forces were off chasing down the first Battle Lion and so you attack caught them from surprise.  This was the real battle.  Using your charms to their fullest when you hit their camp.  The soldiers were scattered and in disarray the tents were trampled.  When you turned for a second pass the dragon blooded organized enough of a defence that your were able to engage them in a real fight.  The battle ground was lit with the light of the Sun at noon even though it was midnight.  The soldiers were scattering before you and the bodies were building up around your troops.  The forces that went north to persue you first groupd turned and saw where the real battle was.  After an hour they returned to battle you and you fought them though you were exhausted.  Your first used the time to hit them from behind.

The battle was a costly one, half your troops were killed or were wounded, but the cost to e Tepet Legions was worse.  Their General fled the battle, he lost his sword Relentless Wind, which you claimed as booty.  Your commanders were not pleased that you had disobeyed orders, telling you that the loss of the battle lion worth of troops was nearly too much for the cult to replace, but that the defeat of Tepet Arada, was a defeat that the Realm would surly remember much longer.  The desicion was for you and your remaining troops to have some time off.  They gave you a galley that was part of the Tepet Legions with orders to patrol the region.  Light duty.

If that was their intention, they failed.

Battle seemed to stalk you, on land or on the seas.  Soon you a number of naval victories to match your others.  The charms that you had learned were so useful in land battles served you well on the open seas too.  You plied the inner sea from the Slave Coast to the Realm.  No ship sending reinforcements, supplies, or battle tired troops was safe.  Once you even staged a broad daylight raid on a Coastal town in the Realm.  If it was their intention to give you some rest and let you heal from the trauma of warfare, or to sideline you as a willfull general, they failed.

The truth of the matter is that the constant war had a greater toll on you than you let on.  The training that you recieved left you feeling strained.  The battles that you fought soothed the strain a bit.  The strain of losing your brother too has added to your burden.  The strain that you felt was not from the war.  It was not from the training and the fighting.  It was from Creation.  After a months of naval raids and patrolling and battling, you and your crew landed just outside of Serrat, the place you battled Tepet Arada.  The battle site was obvious.  The trees were all dying.  The land that was churned up by battle, soaked with blood, was dying.  The heat of the day never reached this land and you quickly determined that it was now a substantial Shadowland.  You quickly traveled to every other site you battled, the onse you could reach from the sea. All of them were shadowlands.  The healing touch of the Zenith Caste on the land was absent.  The push that you and the Cult of the Illuminated had made on these lands had damaged it, not freed it.

You travelled to Nowhere to seek The Nameless and the Inner Circle.  The lands near Nowhere had seen their share of conflict and you saw that there were shadowlands near the town.  The manse that you had been awarded for your service was quite near one of those shadowlands.  As were a great number of others.  The Inner Circle it appeared to know of the problem and seemed to be powerless to stop the descent into the Underworld.  They said that it seemed that the North had been poisoned and that the veil between worlds was weaker here.  This was a problem unique to the north and only a Solar Exalted with the full use of their powers would be able to stop the descent.  The Solar Exalted of the Cult had been so focused on survival that they had missed this issue.

There was one hope.  There were a group of Solars that were not in the war that were exploring other routes of victory, perhaps one of them was closer to the power that was necessary to fix the North.  But they said things are worse now too.  Apparently the hidden First Age city of Braham's Bridge had been uncovered and was now visible to the Realm and all there recent forays had been in that area.  The Tepet Legions had been defeated, but now there were twelve other Imperial houses that were looking at the city with ideas of plundering it and they are oblivious to the damage that battles are causing to Creation.

You have been making your way to where you will meet these soldiers who have managed to stay out of the fight.  In that time your hearthstone, has lost its power and has grown dark.  You know this means that the manse has passed into a Shadowland.  Things are getting dire.

Excise the Issue

The trick to beating Autism is identifying negative behaviours and getting rid of them.  Which sounds really easy, but it is not.  It is not because it requires a person to be self aware enough to see themselves and their behaviours. Or it requires someone to point it out and the ability to understand that that person is trying to help you and not criticize you.  Do you see?

I have Autism and I am functional because I have a mild form of Autism and I am self aware.  Which only means I recognize that I have behaviours that I need to change.  I recognize that some of those behaviours are bad and I recognize that I can change them; I give myself the power to change.  It is not always easy to do this.  Some behaviours seem to be positive and are really not.  Moreover, sometimes situations change and when they change I need to change with them.

I have been in a relationship with Natural20 for over a year now, and I am very happy.  I am happier than I have ever been.  I am calmer because of our relationship.  But before her, I was single for years and I was single between relationships for years.  I did not understand why.  It was because I was demisexual too.  Demiromantic, actually.  Which means that it took me months to move from meeting someone until I was sexually attracted to them.  You can't usually rush someone who is Demi.  You can't rush a demisexual person at all and if you rush a demiromantic you just get a fuck friend.  You need time to develop a Demi into a fore-filling relationship.

Demi is and I can't see a fix for it, try as I might.  I can't get past seeing women as just people and not as sexual objects.  I think it is a positive behaviour that many men do not have.  But it is a negative behaviour because when I am single I will stay single an extraordinary length of time.  But it is more positive because women can feel comfortable around me.  But is leads to another negative behaviour and that behaviour is when my female friends are single I fall in love with them more easily.  Because, the most important aspects of sexual attraction and friendship are identical and for a Demisexual/Demiromantic person, sexual attraction only comes after you know the person.  I feel that this is the correct time, but most people want the attraction to come first.  I look around and see all those people who are in bad relationships because of sexual attraction at first sight. But.  What happens is those people have formed a friendship with me and they want that friendship more than they want sex.  Because the sex is always troubled, because the friendship is better than sex.  I have heard it all and that is not this entry; go look at an entry from years ago.

The thing is.  I love Natural20 and I don't want things to change with her.  I love her.  But there is PrettyKitty, whom I met before I met Natural20.  But I was not in a position to do anything with her.  Then I met Natural20.  But then PrettyKitty is now single and then we discover the bad behaviour that I need to curb and remove.  I only realized that it was there when I was chatting with PrettyKitty and I discovered that I had made her feel uncomfortable.  Did I make her feel uncomfortable enough to make her want to distance herself from me.  And the thing is, I feel that it was warranted.  The thing is, that if I were single, I might not see this as negative behaviour.  But I am not single, and so this is all making me reflect and take a look at everything again.  Alter my behaviour remove the bad and keep the good.  It is trying to recognize what the bad behaviour is.

The behaviour is that I have to change is to just stop looking.  I figured out that I can't look when I am single; it will drive me crazy.  And when I am not single I just have to be happy being happy.  I have to be happy and stop looking.  And I have to adjust and stop seeing potential everywhere.  Because it does not exist.  I will never be happier than how I am now.

This is part way through this process.  I have to think about this more.  I am sorry PrettyKitty, I did not mean to make you uncomfortable.  I am sorry Natural20, I love you and I will never be more happy than when I am in your arms, the memory of your embrace keeps me going.

Here are the stats of the last 600 posts and My blog that I do at every Milestone.  I am generally disheartened because of the explosion of fake views from someone in the United States.  My stats are blown to hell because of them.  180 pageviews a day since February.  10,000 false pageviews.  I will pretend that I have suddenly become popular and I deserve all this attention.

Cruising for distance

The problem with the the American political system is how partisan it has become over the last decade.  In the end of the Obama Administration, the Democrats could not pass any legislation because the Republicans would kill it on principle, even when the Democrats proposed Republican ideas, the Republicans refused to pass them.  That is how idiotic the Partisanship had gotten.  Now there is a Republican President and behaviours that they criticized until they were blue in the face are considered good things.  If Obama were to go for a golfing weekend once a month, he was said to be wasting taxpayer's money and he was bad for doing it.  Now they have a president that goes for golfing weekends every weekend and they don't blink and say it is not an issue.

Anyone can read my blog and tell that I have a decidedly liberal point of view.  So you might assume that I am against trump and everything he does because I am partisan.  I am not.  I disagreed with a lot of what Obama did.  I thought it was a horrible thing that he won the Nobel Peace Prize just because he was not George Bush.  He devalued every other person who ever got a peace prize when he accepted it.

When the Syrian Government used Gas on its citizens earlier this month, the American liberals were upset that he was not doing anything and then they were upset when he did something.  They, the liberals of America, lost all self respect when they did that.  They were showing themselves to be just as partisan as their political opposites.  I, on the other hand, was initially happy that he had done some action.  Later on, my feelings were tempered by other news reports.  That is, when I got more information I allowed the information to guide my thoughts—that is what you are supposed to do, if you are rational and not absorbed by your political views.

What was the additional news?  1) Military Advisors told the President that the Tomahawk Cruise Missile was not the right weapon for the job.  Cruise missiles are precision weapons meant to fly under radar and carry a low explosive yield, they are slow and damage the area, but do not destroy large targets.  The missiles damaged a few Russian built jets, which effectively destroyed them, but it did not destroy all of the jets and all of the structures on the airfield and it did not destroy the tarmac.   If they had Carpet bombed the airstrip they would have completely destroyed the airport.  There would have been no structures left and the jets would have been shredded.  In the last days of the First Iraq War, the United States carpet Bombed the fleeing Iraq Soldiers as they retreated from Kuwait.  They killed about 100k in that one operation.  They did not carpet bomb the airport.

2) It was interesting that it was mentioned that since this President is the first President who has not given up control of his wealth and put it into a blind trust, that we know that he had a lot of stock in the manufacturers of the Tomahawk Missile and the stock jumped after he used those missiles, he used 94 of them and they cost a million dollars each.  So in addition to being weak, they were expensive.  It has been pointed out that any sufficiently diverse portfolio will have many different companies in it, but if it were a blind trust, the president would not know if his portfolio did or did not contain those stocks, so it would not matter, but since he did know what stocks he owned, was it a factor in his choice of ordinance?

3) The military operation took place in the middle of a scandal where it was suggested that his campaign and administrations had strong links to Russia.  The military operation, it has been suggested to be proof that he is not being controlled by Russia.  Russia is the Syrian Governments largest ally.  So the military strike looks to be the actions of a government that it is not being controlled by Russia, except, that it was a very weak attack and that it cause no lasting damage; the airfield was in full operating strength and launching attacks within 24 hours.

Then there was the attack against the Taliban in Afghanistan, just yesterday. They used a bomb called a MOAB, the biggest non nuclear bomb, ten tonnes of explosive power.  The bomb was used in a region of caves and tunnels and reportedly killed 36 Taliban soldiers.  The bomb was said to have a blast radius measured in kilometers.  The government said that there were no civilian casualties.  Reports out of the region, where there are said to be many villages and it is in one of the principle wheat growing regions of the country, say that all the windows were blown out in all the houses near the explosion, that locals thought it was a major earthquake.  My cynical mind says that as reports come out of the region it will be told that the death toll of the bomb will rise, that they will all be Taliban soldiers, men women and children.

I am not saying that a MOAB was the right choice of weapon for the airfield in Syria.  I am saying that there is a range ordinance that could be used, that have been used, to kill people and destroy the war making abilities of terrorists and the ones that the American President used to destroy the airfield where chemical weapons were deployed from, was a minimal effort.  One that enriched his bank balance and distanced his government away from Russia wile causing the least amount of damage possible.

100 years

It has been a hundred years.

The Great war was a war that would end all wars because it was so terrible, but in reality it was because they lacked imagination.  It could be worse.  But it was a war where people innovated greatly.  It was a war where the old ideas died, and where new ideas found a place.  The war started with troops charging across battlefields with cavalry support, except the soldiers were going against machine guns.  The entire idea of how warfare was waged changed.  The first tank, the first war plane the first time chemical weapons were used, all that from one war.  The first time that Canada went to war as a nation.  The first time that Canadian soldiers were commanded by their own leader, was one hundred years ago.  It was for the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

The was a lot of things that people forget about that place.  Like that there were many battles there, the French and the British and the Germans all fought there and they died in the hundreds and in the thousands.  That is something that people forget about battles in the first world war, millions of soldiers died.  Modern warfare only a few hundred soldiers day on our side, but back then because the power of the combatants was relatively equal the casualties were high on both sides.  To be clear, the losing side in modern conflicts can suffer a lot of casualties too, but back then it was normal.

Back then if you wanted to take a position you had to take it away from the opposite and that meant marching troops there, while today it means obliterating it with missiles and bombs, tanks and rocket propelled grenades and then sending armored personnel carriers in and troops.  It all changed starting with Vimy Ridge though.  Before that the Canadian troops were getting a relationship for a stubbornness that outlasted the other armies.  When the first chemical weapons were used, the German soldiers overran all opposing lines, because the mustard gas was so terrible that Allied soldiers abandoned their positions, but not so where the canadians were.  They marched across No-Man's Land and found soldiers in the gas filled trenches that were ready to fight.

Whether because of their stubbornness or because they were better troops than the rest, the Canadian troops were given more respect from their enemies and were more feared.  This may be nationalistic propaganda, but there was some truth that many of the soldiers were from farms across Canada and they were familiar with rife before they joined the army.  The sniper with the greatest number of kills was Canadian, as was the best allied pilot.

One reason why Canadian leadership of our own troops may have been so effective could have been that they were not lords, separated from the common man by birth, but raised through the ranks, maybe.  But one thing that was true for sure was the other battles for Vimy Ridge were lost, because the generals through their troops at the hill.  The opposition held the top and they had built many tunnels and many fortified locations with machine guns that were meant to keep the hill in their hands.  Charging that hill would have had the same result as every other attempt to charge the hill; death.

The Canadians were determined to succeed.  They built their own network of tunnels at the base of the hill.  They built small railways to hundreds of heavy gun positions and they sent thousands of tonnes of ordinance and then they pounded the hill for three days and nights.  The sound was said to be deafening.  The opposing troops were not permitted time to sleep and then when the shelling stopped, the Canadian troops had already started up the hill.  When they got to the top the German troops were tired and their fortifications were smashed, there was little opposition and the Canadians suffered few casualties.  Decades later and that is how battles are fought.  The battlefield is saturated with artillery and bombs from jets, and missiles fire.  Then when everything is done, troops go in and take control.

But that kind of strategy was not what won that war.  When World War Two broke out, the British did not want thousands of crack troops to help fight the war.  They did accept troops, but what they wanted was the thing that won the last war; they wanted Canada to turn into a war factory and churn out hundreds of war planes and billions of weapons.  The last year of World War One, Canada had produced over 20 billion shells, four years before only a few million.  They new that the key to winning World War Two was factories and not people.

Games within Games within Games

My Exalted game is going well.  Mostly.  The plot has started to evolve and become clear.  The Black Sun has been revealed as a major player, but the party still remains in the dark about many things that he is doing.  They know where he is based and a few people have met him in some way.  But, they are not investigating his actions and motivations closely at all.  And this means that he is operating without opposition.

The players have freed the river god near their settlement from his dementia, by eradicating the Wyld zone at the mouth of the river.  Unfortunately, by doing this, they have revealed a first age city that has remained unlooted that is only some six hundred kilometers from the Realm, a nation of 100 million people and nearly a million artifact hungry Dragon Blooded.  (The game designers are horrible at math and population math, so I tinkered with a spreadsheet and the numbers of dragon blooded at year one to figure out that ten thousand exalts was way too low, even a million was low, but… you have to draw a line somewhere.). So now things have changed.  I am giving the characters two month sabbatical in the city of Rathess to let things stew a little.  In this two month space things will develop greatly.  The Solars fighting in the Slave Coast will have many impressive victories, but at the cost of creating mystical disasters, each battle site opens up a new Shadowland in the area.  Only three  locations are free from these effects, the player's home base that is very solidly anchored in Creation, the First Age City, as it has a Wyld zone and a gate to Yu-Shan which protects it from shadowlands to some degree, and Nowhere, where the Cult of the Illuminated is based, but this is mostly because the Black Sun thinks he is still a secret.  The Practitioner just built his first Manse and he will want to come back and retrieve its hearthstone, but when he does he will be in for a surprise, it is now deep in a Shadowland and the manse is now Abysally aligned and the hearthstone is gone.

Ayed the Solar general has been engaging the Tepet Legions in many battles all over the land, using sorcery to move his troops quickly, often putting them in the field twice in one day and making the legions retreat to a central location.  It worked better than he could have thought.  The result was that in an unplanned battle, the Tepet Legion General, Tepet Arada, was surprised and only barely escaped capture, with great personal loss.  Unknown to Ayed, part of the reason for the quick capitulation of Tepet forces is that the Black Sun has put three legions in the field as well, with over fifteen Death Knights and they have been aiding Ayed with out his knowledge.  They have also staged attacks on the individual Slave States and have created many more shadowlands.  All that remains is for the battles to link the shadowlands and then Marama's Fell will double in size.

Additionally, the Black Sun is working with the Infernals to destroy the Holy Road from Whitewall.  When this happens, he will finally reveal himself to Creation and the Realm as a Deathlord a little more scary and a better planner than Mask of Winters, who only took one city; the Black Sun took an entire direction.

This is my point.  The players have known about a mysterious force in Marama's Fell for months, nearly a year, but decided to ignore it.  At their own peril.  They have not been standing still, though.  They have secured two cities in Creation.  Nexus is theirs, if they are smart it will remain that way and they can possibly be in a position to tame Rathess and hold it even stronger than they hold Nexus.  The Practitioner is getting closer to wielding Solar Circle Sorcery, and the bane to Shadowlands, but the north will be creating more shadowlands at a 2:1 rate that he can destroy them.  And the Black Sun will hold the Slave States of, Amber River, Serrat, and Inhalja with their some nineteen million slaves.  Then he will threaten Whitewall and then nothing will stand in his way to devour the entire north.  After the north falls he will secure his hold and then push into the East and the Realm.  All it really takes is to push troops onto the realm and commit a few atrocities and open the Realm's first Shadowland.  Hopefully after sucking thousands of dragon blooded into the North first, then sending them back as agent provocateurs.

The City will fall first, then Nowhere and the Cult of the Illuminated, then lastly the space where the Sword of Creation hit, where Somewhere Else sits.

There has been one glitch.  I invited a long time friend to join the game and he has been a disruptive influence.  Well truthfully, he has just been disruptive.  Argumentative and pissy.  Truthfully I dropped the ball; I had hoped that he and his wife would meet new people and have fun, but I forgot that he likes to cheat and push the boundaries and needs to be in control and if he is not he will actively try to sabotage the game.  I recently told him he could recreate his character and he did so, making it more general and weaker while at the same time ignoring my guidelines for his redo.  He thinks he pulled one over my eyes, but maybe that, will make him a better team player.  But I suspect that he will realize that he made a weaker character and start to complain again.  Truth fully, the party likes his wife and enjoys playing with her.  I told them if we voted him out of the game, she would go too, so I gave him this chance.  Which he basically flouted and slapped me in the face with.  He thinks he is saving the game for me.  He is in fact jeopardizing his friendship with me.

On the other hand, my girlfriend and I just celebrated a year together and I asked her if she wanted to revive her character that she played once ten months ago.  She wants to spend more time with me and she is wavering.  I told her that she would have benefits for sleeping with the GameMaster.  The benefits are that her character will have been made into a combat monster by Ayed in an attempt to churn out generals to fight against the Tepet Legions.  The result is a character who is combat heavy and although a Zenith Caste, few social abilities, but a total kick ass warrior.  Her new history will include battles where she routed forces that had her at ten to one disadvantages in numbers.  Moreover, she is Tia, so she is also the Solar admiral as well and has defeated many in naval battles too.  My entire point is that my friend did not specialize his character in one combat type and made his character weak by doing that, her character can obliterate foes ten times as fast as his updated character could, because her character would be a war specialist.  Same essence same basic advantages, most of her points in non warrior areas, he character could launch eight full attacks for every single attack he made.  Against a very tough foe that is impervious to all damage she would be able take it down in seconds and he would be impotent.

I might be sabotaging the game for my old friend, but he thinks his character creating ability is superior to mine and he is disrupting the game so much that I just want to show him up sometimes.  I know, childish.

Fake News

Fake news is something I would never have guessed would be a thing.  We have Donald Trump to thank for that new term.  But it has been around for a while.  We used to call it Propaganda.  Propaganda was that kind of news that you tell your friends and your people in times of trouble.  You would emphasize your victories and dismiss your defeats and spread rumours about your enemy to enrage your soldiers and the public at home.  In World War One the story was that the other side was crucifying opposing soldiers.  There was the sinking of the Lusitania that brought the Americans into the fight, the Lusitania carried American passengers to Europe, but it also carried munitions, a fact that was not known until well after the war was over.  You could say that fake news has always been used in war and we expect it.  Understand it.

But now it is different, or is it?  How is it different?  It is different that a lot of the news is gathered from the Internet and our news organizations have reduced staff and thus have less fact checking ability.  At the same time the news makers, governments, have billions of dollars ready to deceive those news organizations and tell us the story they want heard.  The story they want heard is twofold.  One that you can't trust anything you hear in the news and the second is that world is a very dangerous place and you need to be afraid and let the big governments pacify it.

To be clear, it is not just the Russians, but the big player in fake news is the Russians.  The Russians have been telling people for years about the terrorist groups that they have been fighting in their periphery and they controlled the news leaving those areas for those years.  There were terrorist attacks in those years that killed many people.  There was a real war there, but I feel that that is where they were testing their media capabilities.  Years afterwards they would report referendum reports and surveys that would make it seem that their thoughts were justified.  They used that to invade The Crimea.  They released reports that the people of eastern Ukraine were unhappy in the Ukraine and wanted out and back into Russia and they moved Russian troops into the area as tourists and military equipment.  Then they staged a military insurrection pretending to be ethnic Russians in Ukraine.  Russia, the main exporter of military weapons to the Ukraine was then able to make the claim that atrocities performed were done by the Ukrainian Government.

We allowed this because, we believe that we should give the same weight to opposing sides of a dispute.  This is our fault; we should not, because it is rare that two sides have equal weight.  Very often, the evidence is overwhelming one way and not the other and we should treat issues based on their evidence, whether it is about climate change or invasions.

Emboldened by their media successes they began attempting to influence others again.  They hacked and planted information.  They emphasized certain incidents and de-emphasized others.  They altered some news stories to suggest other things were happening and part in due to the public's short attention span, when the falseness of some reports were revealed, the damage had been done.  Reports that suggested that terrorists were active all over the world, and when there was a fire near a Turkish military base, the news reported that it was a terrorist attack and people bought it wholesale.

To be fair, it is not just the Russians that are doing this.  It was reported that a Syrian hospital was destroyed by a government and Russian joint attack, while satellite photos months apart showed little change to the hospital despite the total destruction.  The same news organization reported that casualties in another attack were sent to the destroyed hospital months after its destruction.

There is only one defense against Fake News and that is vigilant news checking by trusted sources, news organizations whose livelihood is based on bringing people the truth, and people who are willing to pay for that true news.  Investigative journalists.  Independent State funded news organizations—not dependent ones, nor state run news organizations.
